So I just did poorly on some subject tests.

Assuming he or she is applying to "top schools," how does it look if an applicant has a 99th percentile SAT I and five (5) incredibly mediocre subject tests?

98th percentile in Lit (okay)
78th percentile in Math IIC (...in two tries)
76th percentile in French (also in two tries)
71st percentile in Physics
64th percentile in Chemistry

...

Yeah. Apparently I do better on tests that don't require preparation.

This is a pointless thread; I just want to know if mediocre (all begin with 7s except for the last) subject tests will keep me out of schools. I've got good AP scores and stuff, because those are tests of actual accumulated knowledge as opposed to "how many SAT II prep books can you find the time to read and memorize," but I know schools care a lot more about subject tests.

Well, you can't really go by percentile for subject tests because some subject tests have a more competitive group than others. For one subject tests which I think was Korean or something, an 800 was 52%. For SAT II's the number is more of the focus than the percentile.

Yeah, I just put the percentiles because I thought they demonstrated how average the scores were... and putting the scores would feel like "LOOK AT MY SCORES GUYS TELL ME THEY'RE GOOD."

But if you need context, the actual scores are:
Lit - 780 (happy with this one)
Math IIC - 720 then 750 (yeah, the easiest subject test)
French - 590 then 720 (lol I'm proud of that)
Physics - 720 (...THIS IS A TEST WHERE -15 IS AN 800!!)
Chemistry - 690 (I don't know what I was thinking)

So basically, I did well on the hardest one and poorly on the easiest ones, lol. Lit is good, and French shouldn't matter much because language tests are about exposure.

So the ones I'm worried about are my 750 on Math IIC (IN TWO TRIES), 720 on Physics, and 690 on Chem (begins with a 6...)

I guess I just want someone to say "These won't keep you out of anywhere." Or that they will... then at least I'll know.

Poseur..those are good scores. I don't know what to say to the percentiles though...oh well. Anyway, good job with bringing your french score up!! :) Where are you planning to go?

LOL - just look at mine!
770 Math II [LOLOLOLOLOL my goodness, just kill me now! haha]
740 Lit [bah, I don't mind that, it's like 94th percentile or something]
and
then

610 LATIN AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAH I skipped latin II and III because I didn't want to have to deal with grammar. But srsly at least it doesn't start with a 5. bah. I am stupid.

Oh, and just to put it in perspective, 610 Latin is 48th percentile... uhhhh

@ dukebound: Thank you! My French scores make me lul. : )

I'm applying lotsa places, but my top choice is Brown. I know they're very holistic and don't care as much about scores as a lot of other schools, but I just don't feel like my subject tests are representative of my ability. (They are representative of my laziness, though, so I guess they do reflect me as an applicant...)

@ IV: Hahaha, welcome to the "My SAT I scores are way better than my SAT IIs because I'm lazy" club. :highfive:

Don't worry about it haha - if a school requires 2 SAT II's, they will only look at the top 2 scores and disregard the rest.

Lit you did well, and MII (I got the same score as you).... well........ at least it starts with a 7. Heh. I honestly don't think schools care too much about SAT II's, but I could be wrong. I think it's the 2nd thing they look at after SAT's.

LAWL i just slayed my Dec. SAt2s .. 800 chem, 780 on math 2.. but dont worry
i did nub on my others...
710 on bio (as a freshmen, after honors bio ... didn't retake after AP bio[5] b/c im a freaking idiot...)
and i got a 640 math1/620 worldhist on the same day as a sophmore becuase i was sick as **** on tht day -_- but the math 2 will trump the math 1 score.. the 620 just blows... lawl

LOLOLOLOL - 610=/=natural ability, although perhaps it's impossible to have natural ability in Latin anyway?! So 610=awesome at guessing! Bah.

[quote=mesquite]
670 Latin, and i have done like 6 years of the subject. crap, there goes my chance at Duke and the Robertson.
Lol, well that at least makes me feel a little better - I took Latin I and then a crash course of a fake Latin Vergil class and am now in another fake AP Latin class for Lit, and pulled out a 610... bah. Grammar killed me, and the whole "form the first perfect future comparative form of comparui" or whatever bit killed me more. lololol.

Poseur-- I don't want to sound like a creeper but, did you go to summer @ brown?

Sorry, I know that was random. I'm thinking about going there ( seems really fun!), but it's only 3 weeks :(. Is it possible to take a dual course...so that would total to 6 weeks?
