another one looking for chances...

Well, finally after looking at all those GREAT stat from our forum's members, i decided to ask about my chance at MIT.

In fact, my deepest and only concern is my SAT I scores, please BE FRANK!!!
CR: 480
M: 670
R:500 (8 for essay)

and SAT II:

Math I: 790
Math II: 800
Chem: 760

and as an international student:
TOEFL: 100 (iBT)

Arg...

Considering that everything else is very good, including the interview (i mean things like GPA and ECs, volunteering and leadership and the type of school i am comming from, ect...) (well, at least let's assume that they are very good and very competitive, okay?). So, how is my chance?
I also wrote a letter to them saying that i was sick on the day i took SAT I so my scores are terribly low (it's true that i was sick - i swore) and indicating that i will take it again in January...

Any comment would be apprecited.

Since you did well on the math scores theyll know you can do better, and it might help if you have a writing example that you could send them.

As far as chances i think your eligible just like anyone else assuming everything else is fine. Seems like there really is an element of luck in the app process but who knows.

I don't know how the TOEFL is graded, but I'm assuming your grade for that is very high?

As an international student, I'm pretty sure MIT will ignore your SAT and look at the TOEFL and SAT II's.

pc31, where are you from?
I do not think MIT will care much about the SAT CR and WR - actually, you are not obliged to do the SAT at all. Your SAT IIC proves that you can actually handle the math; however, I would be a bit surprised about the SAT I Math (maybe the "being ill" explanation will work here, I do not know).
In general I would concentrate on the essays and other things. I've noticed that scores are really secondary. It's really impossible to predict chances without seeing the whole person; scores tell nothing.

I don't know how the iBT of the TOEFL is graded, but assuming it is a good score, the MIT admission office will replace the SAT scores for the TOEFL and will only consider the TOEFL and the subject tests of Math II and Chem. I consider your chances are good, and you just have to do good on extracurriculars and the other parts of the application!

TOEFL iBT is graded out of 120--30 points each for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. that said, I've no idea where 100/120 falls...

Matt McGann wrote this in a blog entry about Testing Requirements in late August:
[quote]
Q. What score should I get on the TOEFL?

A. TOEFL is the one test for which we have minimum scores. They are: 577 (PBT), 233 (CBT) and 90 (iBT). You should aim to meet or exceed these target scores: 600 (PBT), 250 (CBT), 100 (iBT).

According to what mootmom said, you got the target score you needed! so now you're competitive. I guess...

The pool is incredibly competitive for international students... :-/ I mean, I'm not saying you don't have a shot -- Your SAT IIs are excellent... Just know that you're worse off than citizens and US residents.

Take that SAT I again and pull up your SAT I math to 750+. I'm sure you could do it because you have great SAT II math scores.

we can take january SATs? Thought december was the last month

You can take January SATs with permission; email admissions@mit.edu for said permission.

Mollie is correct. I did email the admission office for permission and they accepted my case.

Thanks everybody for your comments...

Er, for other things about me...

Let's see. Actually i take more than 5 ECs but because they required to put down FIVE only so i did exactly what they asked. And they are:

United Nation Activity (MUN combines with UN Campaign): certificate as a well-trained volunteer; organizer of some fund-raising events and some human-right campaign.
-FIT for girls: creator and leader of the activity
-Sign language: co-leader of the activity
-Sailing: zealous member (lol) but i love it so i put it down
-Independent writer (individual activity - sort of like a hobby) : write to school's newspaper, being moderator of some internet forums (mainly talking about international affairs) and contribute to Canadian Education Center...

Ethnic group(?): Vietnamese (^_^ - so proud to be a Vietnamese)
(the thing is ther are more than 2 vietnamese who will apply to MIT this year and THEYARE VERY GOOD TOO... - hic )

The type of school where i'm from: UWC in Canada - Pearson College (<a href="http://www.uwc.org%5B/url%5D">www.uwc.org</a>) ==> they choose 1-2 students to represent each country; gather a bunch of youth around the world to live and to study together ==> a lot of international ecperience.

The program that i'm studying: IB
Taking 6 courses, 6 standards and 3 highers. Predicted grade (from the school, not me predict myself): 41/42 (scale of IB : 1-> 7)
Taking an extra course: Further Maths (only 4 students in my year are doing it!!!)
There is no ranking

Other things:
-Visual Art
-Playing keyboard (electronic organ)

Interview: quite happy with my interview.

My application:
I answered all the question, including the supplemental ones...
I think i do have something that i consider as "a hook" but whether or not it is a hook for them, well, it depends on the persons who read it, right? (can't say anything...)

Well, i really hope that they can ignore my SAT I...

Er... in term of asking about selection process for international students, will they compare us with your schoolmates first or with those who have the same nationality first? My other schoolmates who apply to MIT this year are amazing too... - hic

Other comments/questions would be appreciated...

i love you all
PC

HAVE YOU SEEn THE POOL THIS YEAR?

not yet, why? how can you see it?

Ah so its a case by case basis, thats neat.

i think they'll be able to overlook your sat score if you show that it doesn't really reflect on you as a student. so if possible, emphasize why that score wasn't "you", and maybe if you got an english teacher to do your rec, saying that you really are a good english student, that will help you out. i would just focus on the other parts of your application, and it seems like you're a leader, and you're really involved in EC's, and i think that's a lot more important than a few stats here and there. show 'em that you really are a good person, that you're passionate, and that you can definitely handle a heavy courseload. you definitely seem qualified...so, best of luck!

and by the way, i don't think they will compare you to other students when they admit people. i know it's case by case for domestic, and i would assume its the same for internationals...they just look at each case, decide what to do, and move from there. i dont think there's any quotas or anything like that, where they say they'll take 10 from this country, 10 from another one, etc. i konw they want to represent as many areas as possible, but i'm pretty sure it's more important that they get the best matches for MIT than maintain a quota. If i'm wrong about this, i apoligize, im just speculating.

thanks very much

oh my god, i want to kill myself......... MIT will kick me out of the pool at the very first glance..........
My January SAT score:
CR: 450 ===> such a shame!!!
Math: 800
W: 530 ====> also a shame !!!!

OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD ... AAAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGGG

What should I do? Do i still have a chance???????? :((

Is English your first language?
