So if a class has no prerequisites but says "permission of instructor", what should my daughter do? Should she speak with her advisor, email the professor, or pick another class? Thanks in advance for any advice...it makes me look like I know what I'm talking about when I have the answers to her questions! :)

I just brought an add/drop slip with me to the first session of the class. Chances are that most students will be in the same situation as your daughter and will bring add/drop slips as well. I emailed my professor ahead of time, and she told me to just show up and bring an add slip for her to sign.

I think the policy is that you can register for the class during the pre-enrollment period....but you have to turn in an add/drop slip with the prof's signature before the end of the add period or you risk being dropped from the class.

Thanks...but why, exactly, do you need permission to take the class. And why would a professor grant or deny you permission if they don't know you?

from what i'm aware of, there are a variety of reasons. most commonly, there aren't enough spots for everyone to take the class so it's done on this pseudo-first come first serve manner under the guise of prof. permission. other reasons ive encountered include: the teacher making sure the student has the prereq. background for the course on a case by case basis, i.e. biochemistry before/concurrent with organic chem. etc. but to be honest, i personally haven't ever met anyone who was denied enrollment to a class, so i wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks everyone. The class has very limited enrollment. So should she email the professor before registering, or just wait until after registration to contact him?
