I receive email fine but I cannot send mail with my cmail account. my outgoing server is "smtp.gmail.com" and it says it is online and everything is fine but it just won't connect with my account and send. I read somewhere that I might need to "relay". How do I go about doing this?

once again, I point you to this link:

[Apple Mail 4.0 - Gmail Help](Check Gmail through other email platforms - Gmail Help)

^I have looked at that site a million times and i receive mail fine. however, everytime i send mail it says: “Cannot Send mail using the selected Server. The sender address XXX89@cornell.edu was rejected by the server smtp.gmail.com”

Your outgoing server and settings in Apple Mail should be:
smtp.gmail.com
Use default ports (25, 465, 587)
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
Authentication: Password
User Name: netid@cornell.edu
Password: yourpassword

You can set all of that by clicking Edit SMTP Servers List under Account Information in Accounts in Mail 4, then clicking on the Advanced Tab.

well it sounds to me like you are not passing your password to the server, which means something isn’t set correctly. Probably you are not using SSL or you don’t have authentication setup or something. The fact that you can get mail tells me you are communicating with the servers, you just aren’t giving them the right information or enough information

^thanks everyone. finally got it to work.
