My son’s first choice for college is Auburn and I was hoping you could give me your opinion if he has a good chance of getting admitted.

We have lived overseas for 7 years, currently in Holland, but prior to that in Brazil. Because we lived in Brazil, he is fluent in portuguese and he is currently enrolled in his 2nd year of the IB certificate program for Spanish. He has taken a couple of AP courses (US History, Human Geography, Calculus) and a honors course in Physics.

GPA 3.1
SAT Math 620, Verbal 520, Writing 560
ACT 24

Extra Curr.
Volleyball - 9,10,11,12
Basketball - 9,10,11,12
Baseball - 9,10,11,12
Jazz Band (plays alto sax) - 9,10,11,12
Model United Nations 11, 12

Has done community service in Brazil and in New Orleans with Habitate for Humanity.

I am hoping that since he has lived out of the US for 7 years and has more of a global background, this might help his chances. What do you think?

His scores are decent, although not great, and a little below average but nothing huge. I think he SHOULD be alright if he applies SOON (or if he has already applied). I would recommend getting his completed application in before the middle of this month so you'll find out around Oct 1 when they start the first admissions. He is not eligible for any scholarships. I doubt he would get outright rejected but there's a possibility that he might get deferred, depending on the scores of everyone else applying right now. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if he's already applied/gets everything in before the middle of Sept. and you should certainly hear something by middle of October/beginning of November (since he is int'l, it'll take a little bit longer for the info. to get to you guys).

I know Auburn recently revamped their admissions application with an inclusion of an "extra information" sheet and other questions, which are now more important. I would assume this is where he can talk about his global background.

Don't sweat it Hollandmom! It is what it is! While Auburn is increasingly difficult to get into the process is out of our hands and we can't waste our energy worrying about it. My friends who didn't get into their top choice ended up loving where they ended up. I anxiously await my acceptance but am not in a knot about it. I got in Bama but then everyone seems too. My others I have to wait on, but at least I have Bama.

Thanks for all of the encouraging words..my son applied last week so we will see what happens. My son has lived overseas for so long and Auburn is his version of the great American university...great school, great faculty, great campus and great sports with everything on campus or close by. We will keep our fingers crossed.
