Another question re: Two colleges!

I completed my freshman year at SMC and just started my second year at a community college out in the Coachella Valley, College of the Desert.

Although COD seems to be a good school, it doesn't have the same kind of academic atmosphere that SMC had (where half of my professors also taught at UCLA and they were constantly boasting about all the people they transfered to UCLA and USC, etc). COD transfers, at best, half a dozen people to Berkeley a year and their articulation agreements with Berkeley are fairly incomplete. This is somewhat unsettling, since I want to transfer to Berk: Should I be worried?

Will the UCs I apply to (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine) be able to see that I did my first year at SMC? Will they look down on my completing my second year at COD?

Doesn’t really matter what CC you go to as long as you do well there. SMC does boast the highest number of transfers to UCLA, but the admissions people could care less if your GPA isn’t up to par.

OK, cool. Will the UCs be able to see which courses I did at what school? Or will they just see the CC that I am transferring from (which I think would be the one I am currently attending)?

The reason SMC sends so many people to UCLA is because UCLA is right there. I’m sure one of the community college close to Berkeley sends a metric crap load of people there.

Also, no one outside of CC goes around ranking community colleges

While it may be true that it is ridiculous to rank community colleges, I do feel that it has some merit.

Although my current college seems to be a good school, I do feel that SMC had more resources and was better able to hire qualified professors. Most of my professors at SMC had PhDs, had graduated from elite universities, were active in their field and/or had a lot of work experience in their field. I do feel that this impacted the classroom experience. In addition, being in a major city, you had many more chances to have interesting educational experiences beyond the classroom.

In any event, I am still curious as to how the UCs will see my coursework completed. Will it list at which college I completed the pre-requisites, since I will have completed them at more than one college?

Yes, they will know which courses you took from which college.

Thanks for letting me know!

SMC only sends the most students to UCLA since its right there and they have the most students of the CC’s, an ungodly amount…

Hey usdenick, fellow COD student here. I get what you’re saying about the academic atmosphere here. The quality of instruction is all over the place. I’ve got instructors who are demanding, which I like, and then I’ve got professors that are obviously teaching to the lowest common denominator and don’t demand or expect much. The worst classes here are the ones that mandate group work. Right now I’m taking a micro-economics class and I’ve got a couple of rocks in my group that contribute nothing. And parking sucks, but you know that already.

Hey, cool to see another CODer on here. I’m probably too hard on the school since I’m still getting used to it and the atmosphere is so different from my last community college.

In any event, there were certainly a lot of unmotivated students at SMC, too. I’m more concerned about one or two professors I have this semester, but I don’t want to say too much since I’m secretly afraid they can read these posts. Haha… Good luck in your micro-econ class!

Just a note to clear up any confusion that might still be there:
When you fill out the application, you can list multiple schools and the classes you took/will take there
