Parents and Colleges

Is their methodology available?

Interesting list New College and two state liberal arts colleges…

Interesting. Look at the disparity between instate and OOS tuition. That’s where they are making their $. So it’s great if you are a resident, not so much if you are OOS.
USN&WR usually lists Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA among the best for your money.

As a former New College parent…I can only say if you and your child are considering it you have to look very closely at the program. Some of my S’s friends have gone on to prestigious college professorships and research positions and some have been essentially directionless after spending years there without graduating. IMO it takes a seriously committed and motivated student to succeed. A very intelligent cohort, close friendships and lots of opportunities for getting sidetracked.

I couldn’t find their methodology on the website. I know some of the public schools like Geneseo and UNC also appear in the top 10 list of Best Public Values in the Kiplinger 2009-2010 ranking.

Not sure what methodology was used here though…

I’d like to add University of U and U State University as good possibilities for a good value. Everyone gets instate tuition there.
