another repetitive chances thread but with monkeys

i am pulling and hoping for UCSD.

I was wonderin if you guys could follow my self evaluation for an in state student. let me know your opinions if any. thanx.

My GPA is not high at all. I have a 3.7 UC GPA. so 3700 pts. I scored a 2030 on the SAT 1 (730V 670M 630W) and a 720 on SAT II US history and a 670 Literature. So total 3420 and .8 of that is 2736. I have something like 44 classes which would earn me 500 pts. Service is in abundance 400+ hours- 300 pts. Leadership, Eagle Scout, president of other clubs...whatever...so another 300. and special talents...California Boys State delegate, 2 varsity sports other crap if needed. so another 300 pts. if that is added up i end up getting around a total of 7800. Is that good enough if only 7426 was cutoff 4 lst year? Do you agree with my assesment? (I was going off of a guidline posted prior to this thread.) I guess i could try to boost my scores a little, but i dont think there would be any significant increases. Let me know if i am a far reach, just a reach, aoreven a match. Greatly appreciated. thanx.

3700+
2736+
500+
300+
300+
300=7836 (good enough?)

C'mon...somebody agree or disagree

It's definately possible, I think you are right in there with all the other good applicants. Don't make yourself crazy calculating every little point though. Acceptances in the UC's are kinda random, who knows what they are looking for.

Though many people would like to disagree with me I think race and major are somewhat important factors.

On my application I was able to fill out the "educational programs" section with MESA club and an ROTC computer class. It was kinda a reach but that may have helped me get in. If you can find something for that section you might feel better about the point thing.

It's definitely a reach; if you bring your score up to 8,000, it'll definitely be a match.

^oyama

to get over 8000 points maybe i can ask my parents to temporarily divorce...or maybe i can ask my dad to quit his job and pull in less than 30,000 a year...or maybe I can ask my dad to relinquish his bachelor's degree, but that probably won't work. Umm...I guess i better just pray for an immediate familial death. That'll get me 500 points! Thankx for the opinion. I agree that i need to get the "point total" up somehow. If only i would have tried harder in school (my gpa is really low for UCSD). But i think i've got a slight chance. IT SUCKS THAT I AM A MIDDLE CLASS, CAUCASIAN, SUBURBANITE WITH NO "OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME."

Oyama you're a pretty harsh grader lol. I'm looking at these stats i think you're in for sure.

A lot of people in my school (mostly IB) didn't get in UCSD with mostly similar stats. I think he's in, too, and that's why I said he's a reach (fairly good chances to get in), but in order to clinch it, 8,000 would be ideal.

your in...but not for a impacted major i dont think
whats ur intended major by the way ur stats r pretty good

^
Political Science; something in the social science department. Maybe Philosophy, History...I don't know. I'm not sure if poilitcal science is an impacted major. (i hope not) But i'm willing to put down anything that will get me in...as sad as it sounds. By the way I got my last SAT II back and my literature was a 720. So I have two 720's.

PoliSci, though a popular major and strong department in UCSD, is not impacted, therefore you're fine.

Assuming you weren't too generous with your points, you're definitely in with 7836. The cutoff for fall 2006 was ~7400 points.

No i wasn't generous. I just gave myself points for what i would get. for example it said eagle scout would give you 300 points, so i gave myself 300 points. It also said boys + sports teams would give you another 300 for talents. I have a ton of service. another 300. so...i just hope i get in.

thanx for all your opinions.

"IT SUCKS THAT I AM A MIDDLE CLASS, CAUCASIAN, SUBURBANITE WITH NO "OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME."

Please tell me that you were not being serious.

yeah bro...way to catch my sarcasm...i was kidding!

youre in

id go for los angeles with those stats

By no means would I say LA is a shoe in with that. Possible, but not shoe-in.

However, as long as UCSD agrees with you with your assortment of extra points, you would be in to at least standard acceptance. If you were trying for one of the impacted majors, they would then go through again and see where you compare to the others trying for those spots.

UCSD first tries to guarantee you at least a spot in the year before they guarantee you a spot in the major.

I just visited the college and the admissions director said that for the incoming class of 2010, the cutoff point was 7541 but that changes every year. I would caution the OP (bobdylan) to not go ahead and think you're going to get 300 points for leadership and the other 300 for special talents...he said that not a lot of ppl get the full 300. Some activites are minor and some are major to them so those 600 are a toss up. To them quality is better than quantity so being president of 5 clubs could hurt more than help. Other than that...i think UCSD is a match...ive been trying to add up my points but there's no use....you'll never know!!! Good luck.

my stats were kinda like yours..and i didn't get into cal or LA. u should be able to get into SD, but LA and Cal are gonna be kinda hard. just don't expect to get in, so if u do it'll be so much more sweeter, and if u don't u won't make a big fuss about it like i did haha.

varsity sports=special talent!?!??!

and how much points would it be if my bio teacher died?

cause she did. :(

The cutoff for 2010 is actually 7421.
