another repetitive chances thread but with monkeys

You guys also have to take into account the drastic increases in overacceptance this year--this might have a critical effect on the number of people who will get accepted next year. Unless the college is expanding (ie Davis) next year, then it will be hard for the UCs to accomodate all the admits there meaning their selectability index will have to increase in order to admit less students.

thanks for scaring me more, oyama.

Oyama, you are right.

UCSD's acceptance rate jumped quite a bit this year, didn't it? It went from 39.7% to 45.7%. I guess it will be harder for the class of 2011.

that's *ing gay *!!

not fair! :(

i only went off the sheet that allotted points for specific activities. luckily alot of the extra curricular stuff i had was listed. and it said being in a varsity sport, along with being a boys state delegate would get me 300. i went strictly from the sheet, (the URL was posted earlier). But yeah i don't have a chance at ucla...i didn't think i had much of a chance at ucsd...so i just hope.

My EC arn't great, but they're good for an average applicant...i think. i mean boys state, eagle scout, two varsity sports, key club, link crew member, president of young mens organazation, tons of service hours (400+), other leadership stuff should count for something right?

Totally forgot about that. Really cool stat, though. One of those ego boosters. With this and the relatively constant increase in people applying for well-known colleges, the acceptance rate will only fall more and more.

Good thing we got in now ;)

And BobDylan, I wouldn't say you have no chance at UCLA. That GPA hurts, yes; however, people with lower have gotten in (and people with higher haven't).

EDIT: And just to clarify, you understand that the points put there are the max limit you can get for that category, right? Admissions decides on their own how many points to allot per item.

^yeah i understand. but on this forum somebody said you either get all half or none. and once again i went directly off the site.

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/kisasong/UCSDComprehensive.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.geocities.com/kisasong/UCSDComprehensive.htm</a></p>

i don't know if it is a valid measuring stick, but that is what i did.

i dont think ucsd made that

yeah, it gives a nice overview, but i doubt that was made by ucsd.

Theres something similar to this on UCSDs own website; however, I don't think those amounts match up. Also, I dont think the half or non rule is real either. Admissions can play with the numbers as much as it wants. They only have those as their max limits for how much they can hand out over one issue.

If I find the site again I'll put it here.

EDIT:

[Quote=<a href="http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html">http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html</a>]

Step I - Academic Review Maximum Consideration

Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300
Educational Environment 300

Step III - Socioeconomic Factors

Step V – Computing a Comprehensive Review Score
Eligible applicants will be assigned a comprehensive review score by totaling the scores from each category listed in steps 1 through 4. Eligible applicants are then ranked based upon that assigned score. Applicants with the strongest combination of academic, personal characteristics and achievement factors will be admitted in sufficient numbers to meet campus enrollment goals.

So ya, that Geocities is wrong with its numbers in that they pull some of those out of thin air. SD Admissions are also free to give whatever they want of the possible max points. They will rarely give the max points as well. Basically, if you're not over 7500 with GPA + SAT, you're hoping Admissions Office will reward as much as possible in your favour.

And just to make it clear for others who check this later, SAT points now are:
(SAT I + SATII Highest Score + SAT II 2nd Highest Score) * 0.8

I just want to say, though, I got in relying on the extra points as well. I had excellent SAT scores, but with my GPA I thought I was doomed. Everything I did outside of school saved me though, so you definitely have a shot. Just don't be positive the points will be there for you. I had friends with higher GPAs and decent SAT scores which didn't have the extra points to get in, even though they were heavily involved in ECs as well.

It all relies on how that admissions officer feels right then and there.

i am starting to think i have a marginal chance at getting accepted. so i'll just hope, which at this point is all i can really do.

I wouldn't count on the full 300 on community service or special talents
Leadership, community service and special talent points are especially hard to gain. It cannot be something typical.

eagle scouts... that should get u the leadership points (if you write a good essay on it) since that rank is extremely prestigious in the academic world.

i say that ur chances of getting in is quite favorable
however, due to the over acceptance of 2010... i dont know whats going on.

wouldn't fret about it too much, nothing much you can do know

i think i can maybe get points for:

varsity tennis?
community service.
my bio teacher died while giving birth.

your bio teacher is not some1 in your family....therefore you get no points for that

try to become the captain of the varsity tennis

for community service, earn over 300-500+ hours..... in 2 services from soph - junior yr

^dude...i was co-captain of the football team. i didn't think that did anything for me.

and 300-500 hours is tough to do. it seems i've sacraficed my life for others, and i'd only estimate ive spent 250-300 hours on service.

^^brian, what is your uc gpa and how high are your SATs?

dylan, my stats are here: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=210418%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=210418</a></p>

we seem to have pretty similar stats...except your gpa is slightly higher and my sat scores are slightly higher. i think i might have a little more ecs than you. but yeah, hope we both get in to ucsd.

yeah, hopefully. :)

mrxalleycat, the death HAS to be in your family?

technically anyone i know dying is a personal struggle, no?
