So before calSO i was pretty sure I was going to major in econ/business, but after all that advising and stuff on how I should explore my interests (and haas really does not sound that appealing) I don't know what to major in anymore. So I'm going to go for a kind of neutral schedule >_> to feel around:

Math 1A LEC Hald MWF 1-2 PM
Math 1A DIS TTh 1230-2 PM
Chem 1A LEC STACY MWF 9-10 AM
Chem 1A LAB T 8-12 AM
Econ 1 LEC TRAIN MW 12-1 PM
Econ 1 DIS MW 8-9 AM
Astronomy C10 LEC FILIPENKO MWF 3-4 PM
Astronomy C10 DIS F 2-3 PM

Is this schedule too much to handle??? Will I know if I'm a science person, econ person, or neither by taking this schedule?

and astronomy and chem both count as physical science in the l&s breadth rquirements, so should I just not take astronomy and take another type of breadth? Or if I (think) I'm interesed in astronomy I should just take it?

funny cuz my fall 07 schedule was math1a, econ 1, astroc10, seminar. all wiith the same profs lol. astro is fun. but chem might ruin ure sem. take astro cuz its a great transition course and its very entertaining

This is a very typical, yet difficult schedule to take for your first semester at Berkeley, but it will help you decide what kind of person you are, hopefully. I think this schedule may be too much to handle & I wouldn't take both Chem & Astronomy unless that is what you want to take. Instead of taking all three of Math, Chem, & Econ, I would suggest taking only 2 and maybe doing a course that's a little lighter on work and is still something you're interested in (like Psych 2) if you're still trying to figure out what you want to do at Berkeley.

From what I've heard from people who've taken Chem 1A without AP Chem, it is very possible to succeed as long as you study for the tests, do all the labs, and grasp the concepts.

Difficult but typical for many students. Pushing Econ 1 or Chem 1A to next semester would lighten the load a lot. Why exactly do you want to take Chem 1A? If you are taking it to meet breadth, that wouldn't be my choice in how to satisfy that requirement.

Chem 1a is a class many premeds will be taking, at Calso i learned that apparently this class is a major weeder class (even though ratemyprofessors.com has good comments about the class)

The reason Chem 1A is a weeder is that many many many students, who aren't actually strong in math/science, still think they want to become doctors. So they sign up for Chem 1A, completely unprepared for the kind of work required. They earn their C- and give up their (unrealistic) dreams of being a doctor.

Maybe like some kind of pre-med concentration. Is it possible to drop chem 1A if it gets to hard or change it to P/NP ? x_x I'm actually really worried about Math 1A i've heard some scary things about hald.

Go to webcast.berkeley.edu you can watch the chem 1a course, i think spring 2008. Maybe Fall 2007. Anyway, watch it. Do you want to take that class?

wow thanks :D that was a really helpful link. I just watched teh second lecture for chem 1A. it's okay, kind of boring and i think it probably requires doing the reading and the hw especially later on in order to do well, which probably would take a lot of time (and there are labs and writeups). i dunno @@ is that the right attitude for a class im going to take? I guess ill go watch videos of other classes I'm interested in and see how my @@ enthusiasm or lack thereof for chem measures up ._.

If I were you, I would take it second semester. In fact, I was you, and I did do that. Not with Chem, but Physics 7A/Math 1B. I did well in physics but not well in math 1B, I switched it to P/NP and never took another math/science course.

Chem 1A with prof. stacy/majda/boering is fairly simple. Pay attention to lecture and learn the stuff on the slides. Anything in reading but not mentioned in lecture is not on the exams. It's fairly straightforward. You only have two formal lab reports and the others just have questions. They even give you a really stupid project to help your grades out.

If you have taken AP Chem and gotten a 4/5, the class will not be too difficult. If you haven't taken AP Chem, I would say the class is fairly difficult.

I haven't taken ap chem but i did take honors chem and scored well on SAT ii. if i preview the course material over the summer will it still be fairly difficult?
