Hey guys! So I got my test scores back today and I got a 2300 (770 CR, 780 M (grrrrr), 750 W (8 for essay, 78 MC)). I plan on applying to HYPM next year and I know they're pretty competitive. I'm pretty T_T bleh about my score, but do you think I should retake the test and hopefully get around 2350-2400, or should I just focus my energies on other activities? I find that I KNOW practically everything on the SAT's, and most of my mistakes were just careless, so I would prefer to let things lay and go about doing other things that would benefit me in life than study feverently for a test that, for me, would be based on a mixture of concentration and luck. However, how much would a 2300 (and 8 for essay!!) affect my chances in admission at these crazy-competitive schools? I'd love your opinions, all! Happy holidays by the way...I believe the last day for most schools is tomorrow.

Unless you get a 2400, you'd be wasting your time.

If you feel like you could retake it without much additional effort and get 2350-2400, then go for it. Just brush up over Christmas break and perhaps test standby in January... while SATs are still fresh in your mind. But if you start brushing up and continue with careless mistakes and feel like you're not gonna improve, then leave it.

Like you said, it's a combination of concentration and luck. Most people I know who got high scores (not even as high as that) and retook it actually did a few points worse. I don't think a significant climb in your scores is reasonably likely.

Tests are only one part of the equation, and from what I hear, schools like HYPM are getting to be much less stingy about scores than their applicants are. Most schools see GPA as a more important indicator of college success, not to mention, you have so much more to enjoy and enrich in your high school career than three-ish hours on a Saturday morning.

do you really want colleges to see that you are obsessed with test scores to the point that you are retaking a 2300? If you don't think that is obsession, then, by all means, get that 2330. It's not going to increase your chances for admission in the slightest.

if u do retake, the benefit is that most colleges cherrypick,
so the chance of improving ur score is pretty good, unless ....
lol

gl with ur decision.

I just logged in to write this reply:

You're crazily obsessed with getting good scores, are you? Get a life, go outside, and live your life. Those extra 30~50 points are not going to increase your chances by the slightest.

Not worth it. I wouldn't if I were you; a 2300 is an ELITE score. Not just good. Not great. But freakin' ELITE. So, relax.

i don't think you should retake it.

i agree with alpha 2400

If it was a person like me, sub 2000 - darn, then yes, but with that score, I say focus on something else and not waste time on sats anymore.

Alright guys...thanks for all your advice. Yes, I hate studying for the SAT's, and I feel I've learned all I could about grammar/reading (truly, I've learned a LOT of grammar). I'm not going to waste my time anymore trying to improve this score, and I may make stupid mistakes the next time I take this too.

Cyborgxii: Yep I'm crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyxyxyxyxy

Ephemeral: I actually know a guy who did get 2300, retook, and got 2330. I thought it was really pointless.

Thanks all!!! Have a relaxing, productive, fun winter break!!
