another sign of problems for tuition

reading posts about lines of credit, home equity etc and hopefully this is not a sign of another avenue of funding disappearing!
Indiana U is a school my son wants to consider.. with their automatic merit aid, it was potentially feasible to attend as we wont qualify for need based aid. Alot of the schools he wanted to consider we were counting on merit aid to help
Here is what is on their website now:

Due to an overwhelming response and increase in applications for admission, Indiana University is no longer awarding Automatic Academic Scholarships to newly admitted students for the fall of 2009. Students admitted on or before January 15th may continue to submit updated academic information for further scholarship consideration to the Office of Admissions through February 2nd, at which time all Automatic Academic Scholarship awarding will cease.

just got a reply on the indiana board, that this may be only regarding 2009 freshman class. that last sentence worried me a bit about the program ending all together. If back again next year, it will be especially important to get all these applications done as soon as possible to be considered for merit money

Thanks for the info, parent56. It seems obvious there will be increased competition for financial aid and merit aid scholarships. We all have to assume the rules or standards for 'automatic' scholarships will be changing in response to the higher demand, and not just in Indiana.
