Byerly,

You kill me...you really do (great sense of humor though).

Byerly,
lol.

you just don't give up!
Word association games and such like the ones on the Princeton/Yale boards are indicative of a strong online and playful community.

(I could easily subtract your "70% of the class at Yale is filled EA" thread that you repost all over the Harvard board as not 'counting')

"A playful comunity..." Ah yes.

byerlys just mad that his beloved harvard isnt #1 in this ranking.

however the rankings are skewed because each ivy has a direct link from the cc forums page, while the other schools dont. also, im not sure the size of the institution's classes are a good equalizing point, as the number of people wanting to go to these schools may have no relevance to their sizes. (ex. princeton's classes are approx 2/3 the size of harvards and yales. although princeton would still beat them without regard to class size.)

I'd be the first to point out that the high number of views on the Princeton forum was in fact caused by the desire of those kids to communicate with one another as opposed to being in the forum to ask questions of fact.

yes us princetonians are social animals. :)

You have far too much time on your hands.

Here are the data in pure form for the top 75 schools for # of posts:

Keep in mind that these data are from a few days ago for the preceding month. Numbers & patterns are likely to change over the course of the year, e.g., Princeton maybe hot in the past month because the new admits have no other place to converse other than CC relative to other colleges.....perhaps we'd see a lesser Princeton rank in this popularity index at other times in the year & the restoration of Harvard to being #1! I'll have a look at different times when I get a chance.

lol this is interesting.

With the number of students at UTAustin (more than any other university, I believe) these (unnormalized) numbers could really be skewed with a few judicially placed postings.

Evil laugh. :p

But imagine the number of meaningless posts that would generate.

Oh, kind of like those games mentioned above.

Papa, can you cook your books and make Harvard # 1?....It certainly would make at least one person very happy.

I'm working on it....I'll figure out some angle to restore Harvard's numero uno status via creative stats

LOL to byerly (re value of "silly" posts) and simba and PapaChicken for working on "cooking" the books. Yes, I definitely think we need to add a "value" component to allow for post quality.

Hmmm, would a "silly word association" post get more or fewer points than the popular, "what hotel would you stay at for Parents' Weekend" post? :D

I'm trying.....

Method: Googled on formal school name in quotes, e.g., "Stanford University", "Dartmouth College", "University of Notre Dame" only for the 27 Ivies & top CC universities. Lac numbers were much smaller, with Williams being tops for that group. Also, I'm sure some other big state schools would show large Google #'s but I didn't thoroughly check.

Here you go:

Rank/ School/ GOOGLE HITS (thousands)
1 / STANFORD / 43,100
2 / HARVARD / 31,100
3 / COLUMBIA / 24,800
4 / U CHICAGO / 22,000
5 / CORNELL / 18,400
6 / PENN / 16,200
7 / YALE / 15,200
8 / PRINCETON / 14,900
9 / MIT / 14,800
10 / WASHINGTON U / 13,700
11 / DUKE / 10,600
12 / JHU / 10,400
13 / UC BERKELEY / 10,400
14 / U MICHIGAN / 9,590
15 / UVA / 9,380
16 / NORTHWESTERN / 9,050
17 / UNC / 8,630
18 / Carn Mellon / 7,860
19 / GEORGETOWN / 4,290
20 / CALTECH / 4,010
21 / EMORY / 3,520
22 / VANDERBILT / 2,850
23 / DARTMOUTH / 2,460
24 / UCLA / 2,300
25 / RICE / 2,190
26 / BROWN / 2,090
27 / U NOTRE DAME / 870

I think the UC's get the short one here cause I added the location to each, e.g., "university of california, los angeles"....more complex name.

Harvard's gotta be #1 in something!

ps......Oxford is close at 30,000k hits.

pps....I also bet Wash U is biased high because the Googel search also encompasses George Washington U.

Papa I got it !!. New ranking: google hits devided by the number of unique letters in the school name.

(1) Harvard (5 letters) = 31,100/5 = 6,220
(2) Stanford (8 letters) = 43,100/8 = 5,388

The rest doesn't matter.

you're onto something simba.....

There is grudging respect for the Big Enchilada.

You can buy -

"Harvard:The Stanford of the East" T-shirts in Palo Alto, or

"Harvard: The Michigan of the East" T-shirts in Ann Arbor, or

"Harvard: The Duke of the North" T-shirts in Durham, or

"Harvard S ucks and Princeton Doesn't Matter" T-shirts in New Haven.....

But the only equivalent T-shirt available in Cambridge says: "Harvard: Its Lonely At The Top."

It also shows that Harvard is bad at grammar (Its, instead of It's).

Papa:

How do you account for schools that have multiple posts by the same poster ? (good example: Swarthmore)

Maybe every 10 posts by the same poster should only count as one post. :)
