My D is doing a 2-week program at Wake Forest (through Duke) that we are paying for because it is on a topic she is very interested in and we told her we would consider something like this before senior year as a reward for all her hard work.

She has also gotten into a 1-week program sponsored and underwritten by Notre Dame (40 kids selected from around the country and they even pay airfare). Today she also got her acceptance to the one-month long Virginia Governor's school (in VA, I think 200 kids are selected for the Humanities program, which will be help at University of Richmond). The ND program overlaps with the VGS so she has to choose which one to do. Many pros and cons for both -- does anyone have any input? She'll be able to put both on her aps as having been selected, but that won't have as much weight as actually attending.

Does the Governor's School cost money?

If not, she should go to Governor's School.

Is Governor's School very prestigious? In New Jersey it's very well-known and well-received by colleges.

If so, she should go to Governor's School.

Also, what's the ND program about? Is it humanities-focused? Or sports? Something else?

Since she's in private (Catholic) school, we have to pay the 1/2 of tuition usually picked up by the school district. It's still a bargain though -- about $800 for the 1-month program since it's underwritten so substantially by the state.

The ND program this year is focused on global social justice issues and is taught by a goup of top professors. I think it's a program they use to attract top students from around the country (about 400 applicants that meet minimum GPA requirements, etc. for 40 slots) and give them a first hand ND experience.
