Another testing sked question

Ds is a junior who will be applying to three schools that require two Subject Tests (and several schools that don't). He's had one and so wants to take a couple more this spring. He also took the SAT in January and is reasonably happy with his score but does think he can do better.

The plan was to take the Subject Tests in June and redo the SAT in October. Is that just too late for EA? He couldn't do ED because we need financial aid. I think his current SAT score will get him into his safeties without a problem, but at safety/matches where he'll need financial aid, he can get in with his January score and then just update with October score (if better) before those decisions are made, right?

The alternative is squeeze in the SAT in May (right in the middle of all the EOY testing; he'll have six AP tests!) and then Subject Tests in June. He could forgo all testing in senior year that way (though he might be tempted to take it a third time anyway :) )

Most EA schools will tell you that the October results will acceptable for EA purposes. Me, I always wanted to have the second SAT testing done by the end of the junior year, if at all possible, and save the fall for an SAT retest or an additional SAT subject test.

I am a big proponent of testing as early as possible (if you’re prepared)–maximum flexibility. The tighter schedule now will allow your S to retake SATs or subjects in October if he wishes.

I would also suggest the tighter schedule, but consider doing the subject tests in May and the SAT-I in June. If he’s doing 6 APs, there must be at least 2 subjects that correspond to the AP’s- no? If he does only 2 subject tests in May (as opposed to the full length SAT), he will also be done sooner on Saturday morning and he can move on to reading for his AP exams.

After I posted, it occurred to me the answer might be to do STs in May and SAT in June. I didn’t want him to do SAT in May because he just won’t have time (spring sport in addition to all the APs) to do any practice tests before then and it would feel wasted to me. And if for some reason he did horribly on the STs, he could retake them in June, right, and still save the SAT for October?

I will be SO much wiser for ds2!!!

only thing is if you are considering the Latin SAT II test that is only given in Jun/Dec. He will have a gut feel after the May tests how he did, but he won’t know the scores before the June date.

Argh. Didn’t know that. Will need to sit down and really look at availabilities. Latin is one he’ll probably want to take.

And December would be to late for seniors, right?

not necessarily, although it would be cutting it quite close in my book. As always, check with the individual schools :)

Considering he wants to do Latin, I say go with the May date for SAT1 and June for SAT2.

Depends a bit on how much you think (or he thinks) he needs to prep for the May SAT1 and if he has the time for it. It isn’t such a bad idea to just wait until October. It won’t be too late for EA schools.

Well, there is an April 25 PR test date, and I thought if he could swing that as practice – just to refocus his mind – then maybe the May date would be just great.

Another thought: Anything wrong with just taking the two Subject Tests and being done? If you take three, you don’t get to pick and choose which ones to submit, do you?

Just had the talk with D2, she is a 9th grader. Plan is to do Chemistry Sat II 10th grade, SAT I Junior Jan, retake SAT again in Mar if necessary, then ACT in April, do 2 SAT IIs and APs in May/Jun Junior year, be finished with all testing by end of Junior year. We are going to do all we can to avoid any testing Senior year. She most likely will take math IIc, History/Spanish, Chemistry. Some schools require math IIc, therefore there is no need to take IC.

Princeton, Georgetown and JHU all prefer 3 SAT IIs.

My S took relevant AP exams & SATIIs in May of HS Junior year. It was exhausting but he was glad to get it all over with. He took more AP exams senior year after completing those courses & self-studied for a few more.

IMHO, it really is easiest on the student to take the exams in as close proximity as possible to the material covered so the student doesn’t have to review & study the material again in addition to coursework.

He took the SAT in October of his junior year & I believe again in December & March (after the new writing section came out) before he said enough. He took the MathII SATII in Oct of his senior year because he was misadvised to take MathI previously. He did much better on MathII & they had been just reviewing the material in both AP Physics & AP Calc A/B when he took the test–scored 800.
