any chances or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

bump^ any chances plz?

Well, when you say rank top 25%, do you mean it? Because there is a big difference between being ranked 50/400 and 100/400. If it is closer to the latter, UCLA and Berk are reaches with the others being high matches to safeties. If it is the former, and you can retake to a 2100+ then I would say UCLA and Berk are matches, with the others being low matches to guarantees. Good luck.

yeah if you're in the 25% as in 100/400 then you are in a lot of trouble, you can't get into UCB/UCLA with that

thanks for the replies

yeah, my rank is around 70/445 only because I focused mainly on grades 10 and 11

if I improve my SAT though, could I get a chance @ UCLA/UCB?

Berkeley/UCLA: reach

Even with an improved SAT score, it probably won't change much, as those two stress GPA and rank much, much more than SAT score. Your ECs are too few to make up for it.

UCSD: slight reach
UCSB/UCD/UCI: match
UCR/UCSC/UCM: safety

thanks

Hmm, is there anything I can do to move up UCD/UCI/UCSB to high matches or safties?

At this point, no. It's largely dependent on grades at those schools. To an extent, it's easy to chance someone for UCs, because once you can place one, you can place them all (usually, though there are cases when it's difficult). So, your grades/rank/GPA are subpar to Berkeley's average, as are your scores, and your ECs don't make you stand out amongst the 45k+ applying; so it'd be a reach. So UCLA would be too, since it's on level with Berkeley for the most part. UCSD then a slight reach, UCSB/UCI/UCD a match, etc.

would higher SAT I's or higher SAT II's help?
also, I don't think they do, but do the UCs offer any early descision program?

UC's admission deadline is November 30th there is no early decision.
Higher SAT I's would make a bigger difference.
Retake your SAT I's and I'll prospect that you get a higher score and you'll be a match to all UC's.
Plus put that you are African-American on your application. :)

Getting a higher SAT score won't make THAT much of a difference; GPA/essays form the main part of Berkeley/UCLA's admissions.

Race does not matter for UC's. 70/445=15.7% rank. That makes it really tough for you at UCB (99% in top 10%) and UCLA (97% in top 10%). However, I know an OOS at my school who got into UCB with a 1560/1600 and he was Asian and was outside of the top 10%. Therefore, all hope is not lost, but I think that UCB counts test scores more for OOS students (they don't know the quality of our school so they revert to test scores) while they count GPA more for Instate students (because they know the schools). This is all speculation however.

North Africans are not African American so please don't suggest that he lie! While race is not "considered" at Cal, they have very few African American students there now and wish to change that so all qualified black kids should apply!

The UCs are pretty numbers oriented. Your numbers are probably too low for Cal and LA as others have said. Chanses probably start at SD where you can probably get into a non impacted major.

UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Match

You have a shot at UCLA and UCSD, however UCI/UCSB/UCD are more likely. Not being in the top 10% is going to hurt you for UC Berkeley, UCLA and UCSD.

Check averages for admit students to UC's here:

UC Berkeley: 4.17 GPA 2030 SAT 29 ACT (99% in top 10% of high school class)
UCLA: 4.14 GPA 2010 SAT 28 ACT (97% in top 10% of high school class)
UCSD: 4.06 GPA 1950 SAT 28 ACT (99% in top 10% of high school class)

thanks for the info.
the ones i'd like to attend would be UCSD, UCD and UCI

ucs don't check class rank...just raise your SAT scores a little bit and I think you have a solid chance at UCLA and UC Berkeley.

Are you sure they don't take a look at the class rank. For our school, it's on our transcript. So I guess they would have to take a look at some applicant's.

UCs care THE MOST about class rank, don't listen to wizard. Berkeley cares more about rank/gpa than UCLA, so if you have high SATs you should consider LA more than berkeley, and if you have low score consider berkeley.

Yeah, I was about to say what saasaa did; rank is hugely important at the UCs (as are GPA and course load).

funny, my son's GC also said that UCs don't take into consideration rank (they do notice ELC)
