Another UC Personal Statements Thread!

Hey guys.
I have yet to start my UC p. statements, but I will start today!

Anyway, unlike most applicants, I'm a New Yorker, so my acceptance rate is low as it is. Therefore, these essays must rock. Okay, so I was wondering if these three ideas were suitable for the statements:

1) Academic Preparation 250words
- I read around in this forum, and people recommended to choose one subject. I could talk about history, or specifically world history, and my interest and excellence in it. I guess I could talk about projects done, and leisure readings I've done in this area. It's only 250 words, so I doubt I could write a thick paper on it...

2) What I'll bring to the campus 250 words
hm... Would being a New Yorker be a stupid idea? I really have no idea what to write here. If not, I guess I could talk about my leadership skills in my clubs and other extracurricular activities?

3) open-ended 500words
Is this really open-ended? In other words, can I really talk about anything? The application's question/prompt makes it seem that you should write about a personal hardship, but I have none. So would talking about a study-abroad program in Japan be out of place?

Well, these are just ideas and thanks for taking your time to read this junk.

In my opinion, you're missing a real connection between being a New Yorker and your study abroad trip: your ability to interact with people from different cultures and backgrounds as demonstrated by your study abroad trip, and the different background and experiences you'd bring to campus as a New Yorker on a campus full of Californians.

Consider making the "what would you bring" prompt your longest essay and weave the two into the essay to demonstrate how you'd both bring diversity yourself as a New Yorker AND be tolerant and excited about embracing the very diverse population on campus, similar to what it felt like to be studying abroad in Japan.

you know you can pick any of those to be the long essay, right? Like I picked "Academic Preparation" to be my long essay. And btw, it's not 500 words. It's at most 630. I know because my essay was 800~ and they made me shorten it to that length.

Wow.
That's a really great idea. I knew that my staying in Japan for a month and interacting with the people would be in one of my essays; I just was blind to the fact that I lived in NYC.

Thanks so much!

As for the open-ended, it would be too repetitive to talk about Japan again right?

Oh, munkeegirl, you're from NY and you're applying to the UCs too..
Competition! haha j/k
Which campuses are you applying to?

berkeley. My gpa sucks though. 88.1/100 T_T. oh! nihongo o hanashimasu ka? ^^

Wowww
I just went through a few or your posts and you go to Stuy?!?
Cool, I went to Japan with a few kids from your school lol.

Anyway, Berkeley?
That's cool.
I'm applying to UCLA and UCB, but I prefer UCLA.
However, I prefer USC over UCLA so...if USC accepts me, woohoo california baby!

Oh, I go to Science haha.
Don't worry my gpa sucks too..it's like barely 92.
what are your SAT scores by the way? (haha)

Kind of mad that UCs count writing...and takes single sitting.
730 V 660 M 610 W from highest sitting. I suck at grammar. :</li>

I know plenty of people who went to Japan last year.
Suzanne, Goran, Chao, Victoria, Seiya, Joe, Amy, Zack, James...Chao said a guy named Jordan from Science went too. Know him? He's Goran's friend.

I went with Joe Amy and the crew lol.
Oh my SATs are 2120 but I'm glad they take writing because there's a HUGE discrepancy between my math and verbal sections. Whatever.

Well, I have to go somewhere with friends now so i'll...ttyl? haha
