Another University Days question

Hello. My daughter has already applied to the university and has met with an admissions counselor in our area. We had been starting to plan a trip to visit on Monday, Oct. 8th since this is the only time this fall that we would be able to visit when classes are in session. We will have a 10+ hour drive each way. Yesterday we received the brochure in the mail about University Days taking place on that date, and it seems if we are to visit on that day, we must participate. I’m worried that this won’t be a very beneficial visit for her. We don’t need to sit through the admissions or financial aid sessions. She won’t be able to eat the lunch (now needs gluten-free) but we will have to pay the $15 each anyway. Does anyone know if she’ll have the opportunity to tour the Honors dorms or personally speak with anyone from Honors or the academic depts that day? Or is it just short presentations to the group that are offered? Any insight from those who have attended in the past? Thanks!

If you’re not going to participate in Udays that day, then you probably should pick another day. I don’t think the school even offers campus tours that day, do they?

were you planning on a campus tour?

I called and they said there will be campus tours included and informational sessions to choose from in the afternoon. I was able to find this tentative schedule online: [University Days - The University of Alabama](http://universitydays.ua.edu/schedule.html) It lists Housing and Residential Communities Open House - so maybe all the dorms will be open to tours for visitors? I’m not sure what the “College Conversations” events are in the morning, but I’m assuming they are presentations about the different academic departments. I guess we could just wander on our own from 11:15 - 2:10 and try to find something she can eat. We always prefer to check out the regular dining halls anyway.

As long as we can get a tour of campus and the Honors dorms and at least hear presentations from Honors and the academic depts. she is interested in, it would still be worthwhile. We’ve never been to campus and this will probably be the only opportunity until Spring, and I’m afraid that might be too late.

Go to the Campus tour website and sign up ASAP…if they are offering tours that day, they will fill up FAST.

As for gluten-free food; one of our student posters mentioned in a recent thread that gluten-free food was becoming easier to find in the dining halls and that it could be prepared to order. I know that the executive chef will try to work with a student’s needs concerning food allergies. I believe his name is Chef James, he was the head chef at Lakeside and extremely nice. He also mentioned that he likes to make menus that remind kids of home (their favorite dishes) and he would welcome any parent recipes. Just a note that this was several years ago.
Bryant also has a gluten-free choice at lunch.
