Another vs. thread!

Harvey Mudd vs. USC, majoring in Biochem.

Mudd gave me $16,700, with an overall cost of around 46k. USC gave me $15,000, with an overall cost of around 47k. USC also gave me Freshman Science Honors, and I'll be applying for the new College Honors Society.

Whaddaya think?

My decision was between mudd and usc...i chose usc.
its a lot about the personality of the schools...mudd is good if you're really into science/math, enjoy being around nerdy/smart people, want to work hard...usc is more laid back and athleticly inclined (a really important thing for me)
mudd is probably more prestigious for grad schools/jobs, but youll have to work hard for that prestige...

I never applied to Harvey Mudd, but I did have to choose between Rose-Hulman, which is very similar to Mudd, and USC. I just know the academics are definitely a lot harder and the social atmospheres at those school really don't exist. The plus side is you would get a lot of attention from teachers who focus more on teaching undergrads.

I concur....

I think the guys at Mudd have social lives. Just look at all those lemon peels on the ground! :)

hey...we had to pick all those lemons...all 2000 lbs of them

Too bad I didn't get any.

If I wanted to go to pharm school, which school would get me in? (assuming that I'd try pretty hard to get good grades)

At Mudd, you could socialize with the other 4 small "sister" colleges & take courses there--Claremont, McKenna, Scripps & forgot the other. A collegue's son went to Claremont where he played baseball, graduated & is now in dental school. He had a great time.

Mudd is supposed to be quite rigorous for math & science. They have an on-going friendly rivalry with CalTech.

It's really which type of school is a better "fit" for the individual. Sometimes an overnight visit can be helpful in deciding where you will be happiest for the next 4 years. Both are good schools.

This really sucks, because USC and HMC are like apples and oranges. At USC, there are so many choices. You can mix and match hundreds of majors and minors at USC, while at HMC there are only about 10 majors, all in pure science/math/engineering. Also, USC is huge (~20000 undergrads), while HMC has ~700. USC is pretty laid-back while HMC is kind of nerdy. I've been to both campuses, and I like aspects of both of them, so I can't really choose.

Anyone care to offer another opinion?
