Another "waiver" question

hello all,

I am a candidate for 2011, and I have been medically disqualified by dodmerb. I had some back problems in high school that were off and on (I am a sophomore in college right now). Although I have a bulged disk, I was disqualified for “weak or painful back.” tried to rebut it, because it doesn’t really bother me anymore. I am into UFC style mixed martial arts and I work as an EMT, if that doesn’t break my back I don’t know what will. but rebuttal didn’t quite work out.

So now I am waiting to see if they are gonna waiver me. I checked with my counselor, and she said my paperwork for waiver request was submitted september 28. So about how long should I wait before I start politely bugging them on the status? Wait till the end of the october?

Also, anyone familiar with this sort of thing being waivered in the past (ie back problems)?

It takes a LONG time for them to process waivers. I submitted my request in December and didn't hear back until February. Just be patient....it's painful waiting, I would know.

It takes approximately 90 days for the academy to process a medical waiver. My son just received a medical waiver for West Point; that waiver took about 10 weeks of processing time.

My son is still working on his waiver from USAFA. The Air Force Academy requires a lot more documentation for waiver requests.

Another thought on this. Check out www.serviceacademyforums.com They have a whole section on DoDMERB and it's pretty active as far as posting. You can probably get some additional help there. Good luck!

I would keep at the "polite bugging" after a few weeks. Just keep checking the status and making sure everything is at the right place. My waiver process I literally had to walk THEM through it. Calling people to make sure each person has what they need, authorization to do what ever... cause sevreal times it got "stuck" and it had to be traced down to some one's desk.

Also... they LOVE vacations there. People will be out of office for 3-4 week periods right when you need them so be forwarned.

Call every 4 days or so to check on your status...and just be polite. It took a long time of painful waiting for me to find out what was going on with the waiver for my orthotics.
