Another "What are my chances?" thread

Yeah, well this is another "Can I make it or not" thread. I had one of these on the board a month or two ago, but it seems to have been deleted. So my apologies if you've seen this before.

I've currently got a GPA of 3.891 weighted, 3.84 unweigted. My SAT score is 1330 (570v, 760m) and ACT score is 30. I live in Northern Virginia.

SAT IIs: Writing 650, Math IIc 660, Physics 650, U.S. History 720

My activities are: Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee delegate, Vice President of History Honor Society, Fmr. Secretary of Science Honor Society, Marching Band (Librarian and Section Leader), "It's Academic" (TV Quiz Show in Washington D.C. area).

Last yr I took AP U.S. History (got 5 on exam) and AP Eng. Lang. (got 3). This yr, I'm in AP Physics B, AP Biology, AP Comparative Gov't, and AP Calculus BC.

I'm applying to engineering at the following schools:

University of Virginia
Virginia Tech
Univ. of Southern California
Cornell University

Have already been accepted to:
Purdue University
Rose-Hulman Institute of Tech.
University of Chicago (Couldn't believe it -- everyone was saying this was a MAJOR reach for me!)

My school did nominate me as their candidate for UVA's Jefferson Scholarship, and I have made the first regional cut, which means I now go onto the interviews. Do you think that will increase my chances of acceptance to UVA?

Thanks for looking.

bump.......

hey, ok here is my opinionn..

Cornell: High Reach
University of Virginia: Low Reach/Match
Virginia Tech: Reach
Univ. South Cali: idk

The reason i say this is...you do not have consistency, like if there was maybe one problem like a 1330 sat score, then ud b fine, but u have several sat ii scores in the 600s, esp math & physics which impairs ur chances in an engineering application. Your ec's are weak/typical. One more thing, i have seen many more colleges look meticulously at the writing sat ii score, and 650 is tough to work with. Umm honestly, you should go ahead and apply to all the schools for the heck of it because you already are accepted into university of chicago and personally i think that is one of the best universities (way too underrated by the public) I also suggest that you pick undecided as your major when you apply, simple because if they know you are going into engineering at their university with those sat ii scores, its going to be easier for them to reject you...ok well i hope this helps =)

Thanks for the advice, xindianx. Unfortunately, I had to apply to UVA's engineering school directly and I already sent the app in. Oh well, hoping for the best.

Hi Redski,

I was wondering if you have already applied to Cornell yet. If you haven't I too would reccomend you modify your intended major or perhaps even your school. Take it from me, I applied to Cornell and definitely didn't think I would be accepted. My uncle, a Cornell graduate, told me if I was truly worried about being admitted to apply to the entomology program in the AG school (they apparently are desparate for students). Once you're in, you can change your major and your school fairly easily and you can take whichever courses you'd like to take your first year anyway. I applied and was accepted as an Animal Science major in the Ag school and my credentials were similar to yours- but lower SAT actually. However, I had tons of extracurricular activities which tied into my chosen major, and wrote extensively about how much I loved Cornell's campus.
So, I think you might want to consider applying to a different less competitive program, and then switch upon arriving or after testing out the waters a bit. Also, in your essays (Cornell has a lengthy application!) just talk about how much you loved the architecture of the buildings and the natural beauty of the campus. Cornell is definitely a school which looks for students who really WANT to go there. Good luck! Take it from me, you can do it!!!

CONGRATS ON CHICAGO! dayam, good job!

University of Virginia- match
Virginia Tech - slight reach
Univ. of Southern California - Im a californian and leme tell ya, USC is the most random school when it comes to admissions, legacy status is very important there but i think its a match/slight reach
Cornell University - reach

Makeitblue, thanks-a-million for your advice!! I had never thought of what you just wrote. I had sent in the Part I of the application to Cornell's Engineering school. But I just got off the phone with Admissions, who said that if I mail a separate letter asking for a school change, then I can get it. So I'm gonna switch over to Agriculture and Life Sciences. Thanks again!

badabing75, thanks for your comments. I've heard of USC's randomness in admitting students.

Anyone else have an opinion?

bump....seeking more responses, please.
