Another, you guessed it, chance thread!

Hey guys,
It would be great if you could chance me.
Since I've been reading so many of them, I thought I might as well give in and post one of my own.

Applied Early Decision to Cornell Human Ecology for the HBHS (Human Bio, Health, and Society) major and got deferred.
My parents are Russian-Jewish immigrants, and I speak Russian at home.

SAT: 720 CR, 780 Math, 800 Writing
SAT IIs:
790 Biology E
760 World History
750 Spanish (not with listening)
680 Chemistry
640 Math I (took it freshman year)

GPA: 96 unweighted (my school does GPA's out of 100) doesn't rank, and doesn't weight.

Classes:
Freshman Year:
Earth Science (required, didn't offer advanced when I was a freshman)
Honors English 9
Math 11-1Y (two years accelerated math)
Honors Global (world history) 9
Spanish 2A (honors)
Music Theory

Sophomore Year:
AP World History
Honors Precalculus (two years accelerated math)
Chemistry X (the options were Regular Biology, Enriched Biology, or Chem X and Chem X was the hardest option available in the sciences)
Spanish 3 (choices were Spanish 3 and 3B, 3 being the more advanced option)
Honors English 10
Science Research

Junior Year:
AP Biology
AP Calculus BC (two-years accelerated for my school)
AP US History
British Literature (most advanced English class for juniors)
Intermediate Spanish (college-level Spanish, through University in High School program at SUNY Albany)
Health (requirement)
Human Physiology (1/2 year elective)

Senior Year:
AP Economics
Mandarin Chinese 1 (first year my school offered the language to any students)
AP Literature and Composition
AP Physics B (considered toughest class in our school, the teacher is tough and the school doesn't offer Physics C)
Calculus 3/Linear Algebra (still 2 years accelerated)
AP Spanish

I had PE every year, so I had a full schedule with one free each year.

AP Scores:
AP Biology: 5
AP US History: 5
AP World History: 5
I canceled my AP Calc BC score because I was pretty sick that day and did poorly.

Awards/Honors:
Toshiba ExploraVision Contest Honorable Mention (10th grade)
Spanish Department Award for Excellence in College-level Spanish
AP Scholar (eh, I got it so might as well list it)
New York State Scholarship for Academic Excellence
NY State Math Honors Society Inductee (also an EC, but I won't list it again)

EC's:
I'm not going to list all of them since it's really pointless to do so on CC so I'll put my main ones.
Worked for two summers 3 days a week for 9 hours a day at a local endocrinology clinic as a checkout person, I took copayments, helped with patient issues, scheduled/rescheduled appointments. I also got to shadow a couple doctors there a few times to see what it was like to be an endocrinologist.

Volunteered at the local hospital for 3 summers (9th, 10th, 11th), ended up shadowing a couple doctors there as well a couple times

Co-President of school Masterminds team (sort of like Quiz Bowl)

Piano for 12 years, performed some high-end pieces at recitals each year.

Those are the main ones, the others aren't as important. Basically, I listed the ones that take up most of my time.

Essays were definitely on unique topics, kind of quirky, but also a bit long.
One teacher rec should be spectacular, the other one I don't really know.

So, yeah, there's my cliched chance thread, please don't berate me for posting one, I truly couldn't resist.

Good luck to all! And sorry for the REALLY long post!

Hmm 39 views and no responses, could I get anyone's brutally honest opinion? I won't bite if you say "why did you even APPLY to Dartmouth????"
:)

I think you're fine. Test scores are decent, except for math. Just goes to show that no one should ever ever take math 1.

Idk about the ECs though. Got anything that you're really passionate about/done really well in?

Well I'm passionate about Masterminds, I'm the second-highest scorer in my league, and I love my job working with people at the health clinic. But you can't talk about your passions for EC's in the EC section, and my personal statement is more devoted to my passion for languages and geography than my EC's. Bad?
It's about how the Weather Channel and a specific placemat have influenced my life. But I think it's a bit rambling/too much. So I'm not expecting any acceptance letters from Dartmouth.

Any more opinions?
I'd like to see some more :)

I'd say 50% shot depending on how good a 96 is at your school. Even though yout school doesn't rank do other kids with 96s get into Ivies?

Yeah, a 96 at my school is really good, especially having taken as many APs/honors as is physically possible. I would say among kids with a similar courseload to mine at my school, 2 have better than a 96, 2 have the same (1 got into Williams ED), 1 has a 95, 1 has a 94, and the rest have lower.
But my school doesn't weight GPAs or rank.

Looks to me as if you have a good chance, depending on recs and so forth.

Great! Yeah, the recs/essays portion is something you can't chance, but I was wondering about how my stats/EC's measured up.
Any others?

Ehh I feel like bumping this, don't feel like studying for midterms :P

CB, I know people at Dartmouth with profiles like yours (one is also Russian-Jewish!), but beyond that, I have no idea.

I guess the fact that I'm in the ballpark is good news to me, and wow, always love to hear of fellow Russian-Jewish-Americans :)

I think you have a pretty good shot....but dartmouth is pretty much a reach for everyone nowadays... :( chance me please :)

4.62 weighted gpa at school
3.96 unweighted gpa
Test scores:
SAT-2140
Math-760
CR-650
Writing-730

SAT II-
Math 2-690
Biology M-730

Extra Curriculars
California Scholarship Federation, Tutoring, Teach class at homeless shelter, USA volunteer for Medicine in Action, Students against destructive decisions,

-Top 4% of class
private high school...very challenging

I'm not sure but I think that my essays we're pretty good..

I'm taking 5 AP classes this year--and i just got my grades...5.0 weighted gpa

race/ethnicity-middle eastern/pakistani

I was wondering if you could also chance me for some other top schools...like university of notre dame, university of miami, and washington university in st louis.

thanks :)

I have no idea for those other schools, but I think you have a decent shot at Dartmouth. But it's a total crapshoot, so good luck.

I'm very surprised you got deferred from Cornell. Dartmouth is certainly harder, but you never know...

Yeah, I'm pretty worried about Dartmouth... I'm doubting I'll get in.
Congratulations on the likely arrival of your likely letter, Arch3r haha.

Chances at Dartmouth look fine. I know 40 percent of Darthmouth's class is ranked 1 or 2 of their graduating class. But since, your school doesn't rank a 1500/2300 is good. If your counselor's/teacher's recommendation are good and your essays really show passion for something, you have good chances. good luck....

I don't know what to say about the Cornell defferal.....sucks...

you are a better version of me

:( great just great

lol have fun at whatever great school you get into!! :)

Yeah the Cornell deferral did suck, but I got over it and stuck it out.
Thanks for the chances though, guys

It seems like great schools aren't finding me irresistible... cough Cornell end cough

Everything looks great. You have as good of a chance as most of the top candidates. Unfortunately, as you said earlier, it's a crapshoot.
