answer the prompt or make it about me?

One college I'm applying to requires a few essays, and one of the prompts basically asks my opinion on a certain issue. Now, someone who is very experienced with college admissions told me that even though the prompt is about something else, I have to make sure I am really writing about me, and I tie myself and my "experiences" into the essay. However, I kind of disagree. In the other essays for that college I talk about myself, but I feel like that prompt wants me to actually give my opinion as a way to "test my intellect" (if that makes any sense).

Opinions on this? I don't want to come off as egotistical if I do choose to tie the essay into my life.

I think your experienced friend means you must answer the question in such a way that shows how you think, and approach a problem.

^ no I think she meant that I should talk about myself in relation to the issue, whereas I am leaning more towards what you said (showing myself through how I approach the problem).

you should ask your experienced friend to clarify. Regardless of how you answer the prompt, just make sure you tie it back to yourself.
