lotsalego- engineering is an intense major wherever you go. I think an engineering student needs to be a diligent worker, in general, if they want to keep up with the demanding schedule and get good grades.

The math placement exam only includes elementary trig from precalc. No conics, no series.

what SAT score and GPA do i need to get into the school of engineering and school of arts and science? i have a 3.5 Weighted GPA and a 1960 on the sats with 760 math, 550 reading, 650 writing.

1960 on the SAT sounds about the average, so that’s good. Your GPA might be a bit too low though.

Here is some advice from me:

-Take general chemistry over the summer at a local community college or take it at rutgers newark. Only major i think that would actually need general chemistry done immediately would be Chemical/Biochem Eng, Biomedical engineering, and maybe materials science eng. The class is not taught very well and more than half the class will end up getting a C or C+. Unless you are amazing in chem, take it at local community college where the grade doesnt count and you can save your gpa.

-Take extended analytical physics 1a and in the spring Extended A. Physics 1b. The class already has a set curve, the professor is actually better at teaching, you have 2 recitations that require you to take the information taught in class and use it the various exercises(big chunk of your overall grade), exams are similar to previous year exams. As a person who never took physics, i did fairly well in the class.

-Precal 115 sucks… Its not curved at all and is extremely hard. i would put my most effort in that class if you get placed in it because its a 4 credit course that you do not want to do bad in.

-You can take 18 or 19 credits a semester, but the question is how many are you going to have completed when the semester ends? No need to take that many credits, many classes can be made up if you miss them. What is better? a low GPA or worrying about graduating in 4 years compared to 5. Unless you are that of a beast in schoolwork.

-Don’t slack off…(will happen)

-Expos can be taken at community college as well so you don’t have to worry about it to much, but if you take it at community college you have to take their english composition 1 and 2. But the class at community colleges are a joke.

-The reason you take expos, precal, calc, gen chem, phys, in first year is because in order to take upper level courses, most classes require at least calc 1 or 2 done, with physics as well.

-Join clubs and such things like that because they will help you choose what electives you need to take. You should take the electives that are designed so you can complete them without taking classes that wont affect your diploma requirements. Also, electives that are easy.

-Talk to dean rankin and get a working schedule of classes so you know what classes you need done.

also a note, average graduating gpa of SOE grads was a 2.7 last year. A lot of companies will specify they are looking for 3.0 min. So take that into account. I am a 4th year graduating in 5 years. I am a couple classes behind to graduate in 4 years. Also, you will meet your future co-workers in class, i still live with my friends from freshmen year in Barr Hall. (Best was not open when i came, but Barr hall would still be my number 1 choice.)

^great advice shipponz!

Does anyone know if the beds are regular twin size or XL twin in the engineering dorms?

All the beds in all the dorms at Rutgers are Twin XL.

Just a helpful tip, the foam mattresses they have are much more comfortable than the spring ones which some rooms have, so if you’re the first person in your room and there’s a foam mattress, make sure you claim it lol. Also, those foam mattress pads are a good idea to make the mattress feel better.

Thanks for the info!

How do people from SAS transfer into the School of engineering because I am going to become an incoming freshman this fall and i know the requirements i need to transfer over to the school of engineering but im not sure if i should try to fulfill all of it in one year because than i am really gonna have a tough year. Should i take less classes and transfer after 2 years? also can i take engineering courses that are the classes i need to take even if im not in the SOE?! Please help guys!

Futurestudent123: It may help to send an email to Dean Rankin of the Engineering Dept. to answer your questions.

For someone who has been thou the soe or atleast a junior or senior
How many transfers do you see coming in to the class
still on the fence between an sas comp sci major or attempting an soe into becoming an eletrical engie

On the bottom of the Rutgers Admissions page it says, " Grade-point average is on a 4.0 weighted scale (range: 0 (“F”) to 4.5 (“A+”))".
I currently have a 3.45 weighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. How would I convert this to the Rutgers scale? Can I meet the 3.6 minimum GPA requirement for SOE?

If someone could answer my previous question that would be great! Please?

RedRoy

You have a 3.45 on RUtgers scale

A+ means 4.5
A means 4.0
B+ means 3.5
B means 3.0

etc…
