answering the question

How important is it on basically any college essay to answer the actual essay question?

I'd imagine that it's what you say that's more important than what you prove, but the person in my HS career center says that it's a major pet peeve of adcoms when the applicant doesn't answer the essay topic.

is it something to answer, or just something to go on?

Do both, answering a bit more than expanding.

Many students try to turn a 500-word essay into a complete autobiography. Not surprisingly, they fail to answer the question and risk their chances of attending college. Make sure that every sentence in your essay exists solely to answer the question.
