Answers for the Class of 2013

Hey Everyone,

I'm a Cornell Student Ambassador for the university and would love to answer any questions you might have about Cornell.

If you've already visited campus you may have seen me at info sessions or cornell days.

Feel free to ask any questions about student life, dorming (I know you all just got you're rooming assignments!), greek life, any of the colleges, about my own personal experiences, or anything you would like to know about Cornell!

I'll try my best to answer everything! Congrats 2013!

Cornell is my top choice college and I would love to really get in, as im sure many others would, however the end of the year just came and finals has really hit my grade tough, I thought i did well and studied for them but it brought my A’s down to B’s, does this damage done to my sophomore year impact greatly? Thanks, also would a improvement on my GPA try to ease out some of the damage?

Hi Fezzly

Cornell always likes to see students doing well, but they understand that sometimes grades slip for a many reasons. Small changes in grades probably won’t even be noticed. Like I tell all perspective students, there is no magical formula to be admitted to Cornell. Try your hardest to get good grades, but many factors are considered when you apply (GPA, SAT, activities, essays, etc). Good luck!

Hi there Ambassador! Can you tell us a little about yourself? Your current faculty, year etc.? Your experience at Cornell? Thanks!

Can you tell me more about Balch, especially if you lived there, know someone who did or something? Especially the facilities, there’s a lot of girls of facebook with a ton of questions about it.

Will I regret living Single at Low-Rise 6.

Hey goddessxx.

So a little about myself…I am currently a rising sophomore. I just acutally changed between colleges. My freshman year I was in the College of Engineering. After taking several classes I realized I wasn’t really enjoying my classes much. Starting this upcoming semester I will now be in the College of Human Ecology so I’m pretty excited. If you have any questions about changing schools or more specific questions about these colleges let me know!!

This past year I lived in a single in High Rise 5. It was a very large single which was great since I had so much stuff. That dorm is not as crazy as some other ones, but this is also good for those days you just want to get some things done in your room. As long as you put yourself out there, you don’t have to worry about being in one of the older or less crazy dorms in terms of meeting people.

A big thing I was involved in this year (besides the Student Ambassadors) was joining a sorority. It was one of the best decisions I have made and I love it! I could go on and on about it for hours so if you have any more specific questions about it let me know.

Overall, I loved freshman year. Some classes were a little challenging, but I got through it. Despite what people from other schools will tell you, I always made time to go out. I am really jealous of the new entering freshman class. Enjoy the year 2013!

Hey Earilmadith.

I did not live in Balch my freshman year, but I do know several people that did.

Here are the things I know about it.
I know a lot of girls enjoyed living in Balch because it was the closest dorm to classes and located right near a bus stop. It is also attached to the Takon Center which is nice because some professors hold office hours there and it is also a nice place to study. There is also a small cafe located there so if you ever want to pick up a quick coffee or something it is also right there.

It terms of the actual dorm…the rooms are a very nice size. They are much larger than what you will find in the other dorms. The closets in the rooms are also very nice so if you have a lot of stuff you will have plently of room. The rooms also have sinks which a lot of girls told me was very convenient.

From what I remember the bathrooms are set up in a traditional dorm style. Each bathroom will contain several showers, toilets, etc that will be shared by the girls in that hall. This happens in all the freshman dorms, but people will come in to clean the bathrooms so you don’t have to worry about that.

Well that is the general description of Balch. Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope that helps!

Hey playhacker.

I know a lot of people get upset about living in the older dorms like the low rises, but I know plently of people who were in them and absolutely loved it.

The rooms are generally a nice size. It is set up suite style so you’ll probably get the chance to know everyone in your suite pretty well. Each area of the dorm also has a lounge where you can hang out with everyone. The bathrooms were redone not to long ago so those arn’t bad and you only share them with about 6 people instead of 30 like many of the other dorms have.

If you’re worried about meeting people…don’t! Just get out there and talk to people in your classes and you’ll be meeting people all the time.

I know a lot of people get nervous about the older/smaller dorms…but honestly everyone has different experiences. I was in an older dorm my freshman year and still really loved it.

If you have more specific questions about the dorms let me know.

hey ambassador, i was assigned to live in a townhouse. i’m worried that its really far from central campus and it might be hard to meet people since every 4 people are separate. do you know people who have lived in them and what their experiences are? thanks!

hey hhmmm.

I understand your fear, but really don’t worry about it! Yes the townhouse are far, but especially in the beginning of the year everyone is trying to meet new people so just put yourself out there.

You’ll have all of orientation to meet tons of random people from all over. I meet one of my really close friends because of a high-five game they made us play. (I know it sounds stupid…but u have the entire freshman class jumping around in the middle of the quad so it was pretty entertaining). Besides orientation you will most likely be in classes mostly with freshman so you’ll get the chance to meet more people then. Also, if you get involved in any teams or activities chances are you’ll also get close with even more people.

Personally, I was barely in my dorm freshman year and spent a lot of time hanging out elsewhere. I was also in a more secluded area…but this was also nice because I used it as a place to relax and get some work done.

My friends that did live in the townhouses have said they can be quiet, but they also give you a lot more space. Also, since they are so big they are a great place to invite everyone over to enjoy some nice grape juice or apple juice on a lovely Friday night

Oh…and if you’re worried about traveling back and forth from central you’re right by a bus stop.

Enjoy it!

Ambassador12,

When is sorority rush for freshmen? Is it spring or fall?

hhmmm…consider yourself veeeery lucky…I really wanted to be in a townhouse after seeing people there, as well as a lot of other people…distance is nothing if you just use the buses

hey Ambassador
can you recommend a science with lab course for a DEA student in Human Ec??

Hey Kimba.

As a freshman you can rush in the spring. You come back to school a few days early from winter break and spend the week talking to girls, visiting the houses, and decide if you want to join! I love my sorority and strongly recommend rushing!

Hey Woody.

If you are a pre-med student you are more restricted in which courses you will have to take. However, if you just want to fulfill the Hum Ec requirement I would suggest these courses:
BIO G 1101-1103* or CHEM 1560
These both have labs, but you’ll generally avoid science majors and pre-med students. Personally, I enjoy bio and know many people who have taken that course. Most seem to find it pretty easy and not too time comsuming. However, if your more of a chem person then chem 1560 is also another option.

Thanks Ambassador - My D will be a design major…

What are your thoughts on the self-segregation that seems to be going on for sororities?

Thanks in advance!

Hey goddessxx.

I have to be perfectly honest and say this is not really a topic I think about too much. Being in a sorority I feel like I am part of an organization wth girls that share my interests and whom I am really close with. Like any club you join, you choose to be part of it because you share something in common with the other people part of it.

I would strongly recommend girls going through rush and if they also fall in love with a house like I did, join! All the houses are different in thier own ways and the girls vary in personalities and interests. I have met some of my closest friends through the house and am really excited to get back to see everyone.

I find it a positive thing that all the houses are different. They each cater to different types of girls. This is part of the reason so many girls find that the Greek system works for them…because it has variation.

Hope this helps!

^ Thanks for the great response! Very helpful.
