Columbia seems to have a good anthro program, but I'm confused as to how the majors work. Do you have to choose a subspeciality, and if you choose biological, will it end up as being evolutionary biology?

For all intents and purposes, Biological Anthropology is not in the Department of Anthropology. It was kicked out years ago, and is now part of the Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology major—which makes sense, since Biological Anthropology is essentially evolutionary biology.

If you major in Anthropology, that basically means sociocultural anthropology: looking at the significance of cultural and societal ideas and practices. (It’s much more complex than that, but you get the idea). Or you could do Archaeology, which is essentially a combination of sociocultural anthropology and examining artifacts from ancient civilizations.
