Anthropology majors - BS or BA?

Are there any of you out there?

If so, what do you plan to do with the education?

Let me know!

I personally am applying to UCLA as an Anthropology BS major and to Berkeley Anthropology BA major. I am planning on having a "psychocultural and medical subconcentration", and then applying to Medical School. Paul Farmer is my idol.

What about you all?

I'm applying B.A. everywhere this fall.

Good to see there are other anthro majors on this site :)

I get the "So...what're you gonna do with that?" question all the time.

I'm thinking either go into medical anthropology and pursue public health/policy, work in a NGO/intergovernmental organization, or get a PHD and become a professor.

that's amazing! there are so few of us.

will you get your masters for sure? apparently you can't do anything with an anthropology BA or BS until you do...

i hope you go to medical school. do you also love paul farmer?

actually you can do a lot with an anthro degree but you have to be creative about it. the cool thing about it is that since there are so many subfields you can go to graduate school in almost anything and have a solid background

and if you search posts here there are actually quite a few anthro majors with really high gpas

oh yayy!
I'm an Anthropology major B.A. I applied to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCD. So far, I've gotten into UCSD.

I simply love anthropology because it's a field that teaches perspectives...how there isn't just one form of society that we all know here in the U.S. It's such an open major that emphasizes a holistic approach towards all things...with an open mind. That's why I love it. As far as future plans with the major, I'm not too sure what I want to do. Like many anthropology majors, I do love medicine as well, but if I were to change into Anthro B.S....and choose a field in medicine, I would love to travel to other countries that need medicine...rather than our own over-medicated society.

As far as stats go,

GPA: 3.98 (includes 4 W's from first semester in college while in I was in HS)
Major GPA: 4.0
Essay: 7/10
EC: pretty average...I have a lot of social work.

I hope we all get into the schools we want!! :)

I applied as a Anthro B.A. major to UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UCI

I havent heard back from any schools yet!! It does worry me that both ucsb and uci are still pending when everyone else already knows their status. Any other anthro majors with this problem?

GPA: 3.85
major GPA: 4.0
IGETC certified

I transferred to UCLA, as an Anthro major last Fall. Just got back from taking finals. Need sleeeeep... O_o

If I got in here with my low GPA and no extracurriculars, I'm sure you guys are in. :D

ugh even ME?

i only have a 3.7 semester average (on a 17-unit scale).

i am, however, transferring from a CA community college, which they (UCLA/CAL) seem to love. also, i am student body VP, a member of Rho Alpha Mu (the california community college honor society), have sung in carnegie hall, and volunteer full time at south county collaborative's health & nutrition subcommittee. also, my essay is banging.

really, guys?!

i think we all have good chances. VERY good.

i also want to practice "rural medicine"...mostly involving HIV/AIDS. i sort of want to take a "rights based" approach, as the numbers of women infected in rural africa are higher than that of men. polygamy, duty to one's husband...all of that!

oh but it might be important to note that my major GPA is 4.0...including anthro BS requirements like chemistry...

colormesomething...be more specific!

we should SO start a "future anthropologists" organization.

Haha, stop freaking out. :D

Anthropology's not a super popular major at UCLA, so it shouldn't be competitive. Also, my GPA was about 3.28. I had no extracurriculars, never joined a club in my life, and transferred from a community college in NorCal without any Tap or Tag or anything like that. In fact, when I applied, it was only on a whim, and I never in my life expected to come here. I like to think I wrote a good essay though. Otherwise, it's a complete mystery. :D

I heard they're not going to let as many students in this year, but I don't know if it applies to transfer students or just freshman. Anyways, I think you're good. If they let me in, I don't think you should worry. :D

Yeah, I'm not too worried about ucla....I honestly think we'll all get into UCLA...but CAL..not too sure :(

What do you guys think my chances are for CAL? I live here in Berkeley with my bf, and having to leave would SUCK!!

BA versus BS, what are some things I should consider in choosing which one is best for me?
