And, bendrumfront, "modern Christians" think all sorts of things about stem cell research.

For example, (see http://pewforum.org/docs/index.php?DocID=145), in July 2005, 70% of white mainline Protestants, thought stem cell research with embryonic stem cells should not be prohibited. 61% of Catholics agreed with this. Even evangelicals, who you are probably thinking of when you use the term "modern Christians), were just evenly divided -- not against the research.

Religion is awfully complicated. As folks concerned with higher education, let's look at the complications. Simple assertions often misread reality and don't get us far in discussing these issues.

Well, momfromme, actually, I DID say "some" and not "all" Christians. I call myself a Christian, btw, that should say something.

NO, Homosexuallity is a "sin" because it says so in the Bible. It's what christianity is based on...You could say it's stupid but being against Gay people would be Chrisitan, if christians actually did every little thing the Bible said. But most don't, so it's wierd they just pick homosexuallity to feel so strongly about. If you start picking on gay people, I think they should pick on liars etc. just as strongly. They could have ****en anti-liar parades, lol.

Don't waste your time with Fides. Ive seen his shoddy argumentation crumble in other threads; not worth your time.

You did say some, but you also said "modern Christians," an awfully broad category.

Well, momfromme, I would be DEEE-LIGHTED to meet an evangelical who supports stem-cell research. I apologize, all I know is what I know.

"He does an ingenious job framing his answer and tries to pass off dogma as absolute truth. I hope none of you are buying his garbage."

Keep hoping. There are a few members from this forum that I have already passed the diabolical Christian virus on to. They don't post here anymore; I have them going door-to-door, converting other hell-bound heathen like you.

Be afraid. The next door they knock on might be yours.

Didn't I just say that? RE post #18.

"Homosexuality is a sin because God/Bible/Jesus say it's a sin."

"But most don't, so it's wierd they just pick homosexuallity to feel so strongly about."

It's because such beliefs are driven by ignorance and fear. Both of which are powerful emotions.

Thanks, firewalker.

I would like to say that I have no problem with a diversity of opinions, that is what makes my life interesting, BUT, I have a problem with people who do not think for themselves, and I know many!

Im glad I stopped taking you seriously ages ago.

Why not engage in a logical dialogue instead of going on tangents?

In Deutoronomy, male homosexuality (women are not in the verse and it is grammatically male only) is a sin on par with eating shellfish.

yeah, but so is lying and being angry. Homosexuality is probably discouraged less then these in the Bible, but somehow homosexuality gets more attention from Christians. Instead of focusing on all these sins according to the Bible, your supposed to just help them become Chrisitans, because who cares if your gay, if you dying and spending the rest of your life in hell. Focus on getting them to heaven then address the gayness, not the other way around. Sure it is a sin but it does not need the attention it gets.

"I would like to say that I have no problem with a diversity of opinions, that is what makes my life interesting, BUT, I have a problem with people who do not think for themselves, and I know many!"

Believe me, so do I. If I had a nickle for every non-religious person I've met who believe whatever they read in books by Chomsky or Michael Moore, I would be a rich man.

Actually lying is a much more serious sin. It's in the two versions of the ten commandments in the Hebrew Bible and it's part of lots of other specific prohibitions against lying.

You love shying away from the tough questions, dont you Fides?

Yes, IGNORANCE and FEAR is what has consumed so many modern Christians these days. (And, Momfrommie, I don't care if that is politically incorrect or not verifiable or not credible)

Fides et Ratio - You are right! People who hate all religion, not distinguishing different religions and their complex traditions, and do so because they claim that religious people are close-minded, are often quite close-minded themselves.

Meh. Those two qualities always been around for the entire duration of our [humankind's] history. Probably always will be. I dont blame anyone.

"You love shying away from the tough questions, dont you Fides?"

Give me a question worth answering -- that I haven't already answered a million times on this board -- and I will answer it gladly.

Sorry, kid, but you just bore me.
