Ok, so there are ants in my dorm room. So far, we've just been vacuuming them up, which is a pretty short term solution. I don't want to call reslife because we've got some illegal stuff (nothing really illegal, more along the lines of extension cords) and they're pretty slow and I don't want to get charged anyway. Would I get in some kind of trouble for using a spray or ant trap? These little ants are really annoying, and they kind of bite too.

you should eat them. with barbeque sauce

I'd like to know too. My dorm has ants all over the place (little brown ones the size of termites). You kill one, two more come out of hiding. It's a losing battle battle because people keep eating/keeping food in the dorm.

First, try keep all of your food in sealed containers and off of the floor. Food and crumbs really attract them. Those little round ant baits (like Raid House and Yard Ant Baits) work pretty well and don't have the smell and toxicity of sprays. Try to notice where the ants are coming from and put the traps mostly in those areas.

Just put traps, etc in a little nook where the ants go, but college employees don't. Many colleges have room/fire checks, but also clauses that college employees are not to open drawers, move furniture, open closet doors, etc, without reasonable proof of something "dorm illegal".

I kept in a very illegal kitten, along with food, litter box, etc in my room for a few weeks last year, and as long as they were tucked away (the kitten like to nap in my dirty laundry in the closet) reslife didn't know a thing. An ant trap shouldn't be a problem.

Get a can of RAID ant and roach killer. Spray everywhere along the floor or elsewhere where you see (and don't see) the ants. Do this when you and your roommates will be out of the room for several hours, because you don't want to breathe the spray.

This is only a "band-aid" because the ants are coming from somewhere else (maybe the room next door?) and will just return.

You really need to temporarily get rid of whatever is illegal in your room and have reslife properly spray for the ants.

From Hints by Heloise:

There are many different kinds of ants, all looking for good things to eat, like wood, concrete and food. Ants are also attracted to the inside and outside of a home at different times of the year. Call your local cooperative extension agent to find out what's in your area.

The cleaner your kitchen (in this case your dorm), the less attractive it will be to ants. Don't leave any tempting tidbits of food around and wipe up crumbs quickly. If you see a marching army, sprinkle boric acid (you can get it at the hardware store) or borax powder along the trails. You can also pour these powders around the entrances and exits of your home, but keep them away from pets and small children. Boric acid can be toxic when ingested in large amounts or in small quantities over a long period of time.

On a positive note, the weather will be turning colder soon, and that itself should decrease or eliminate any ant problems.

Tell your RA, and have her tell whoever's in charge. We had some ant problems too and the exterminator is coming today. It's not your problem to deal with- your school ought to take care of it for you.

Buy a can of Raid and kill those suckers.. if you find where they are coming in, you can try to plug the hole with something. I also saw on tv that rubbing vinegar where the ants are deters them from coming back. Make sure you keep your food in sealed containers and do not keep dirty dishes around, or even food in your trashcan.

If you can spray outside of the window as well, they are coming in from somewhere Check outlets, tape around window if there are gaps, and hairspray, room freshener, whatever will kill them if you can't stand the raid smell. I have killed at with lysol.

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN- vinegar works and does borax

Find their door and block it...tin foil works cause they can't break through

Use window cleaners to kill them (trust me, it works). I suggest blueberry windex; it's smells good.
