Antsy on Waitlist

Hi guys!! I am on waitlist at a place I would really like to attend. I know this may be crazy, but is there ANYTHING I can do to improve my odds on waitlist? I'm assuming the answer is no, but I thought I'd check, as this is quite important to me haha. Thanks!

The only thing is to keep in contact with them to make sure they know you’re very interested (without being a pest!)

They will want to know that the next person they invite is going to come for sure, so if you know that it’s a good thing to communicate it.

Let them know that you are still very interested. There is nothing wrong with calling them on a regular basis to check in and remind them you are still out there. Be very vocal about your desire to go there. I would also send regular e-mails or even a letter by snail mail. They want to know that the students they are thinking about admitting are passionate about attending their program.

Remember that there is a huge domino affect after May 1 as kids start deciding on and committing to programs. Last year folks were admitted to some of the top programs off waitlists all the way into June! So don’t give up hope. But, make sure you reply and put money down on someplace, so you’re not left out in the cold!

In addition to the suggestions above, are there (other) teachers/instructors who would be willing to write letters of recommendation on your behalf? Do you any recordings of past performances that you can send? Going the extra mile might get you off that list!

Thanks everyone! I am so glad to hear this. I will definitely contact them to convey my interest. Do you think an email and a snail mail letter would be too much? Should I call in addition? I guess my question is, how much is too much? (When does it get annoying?)

Email is perfect. You can CC in all the appropriate people or it will be easy for them to forward. My D was on the waitlist last year and luckily was able to sit in on some classes and emailed the Chair. She was probably the first off the waitlist as she heard back on May 2nd. Good luck!

Is it unusual to get accepted off the wait list before May 1st?

Not sure. I’m sure some schools can do if they have recieved enough no’s.

Another thing you could do if you are really interested is to set up a tour there, so you can see what’s going on at the school during a regular day. That will give you a chance to see for yourself how you feel about the school, and for the faculty to see you once again as well.
