Hello Everyone! Ok, so I have been in college for 2 years. I will be starting my 3rd year in August....and I am still suffering from anxiety. I live in dorms...and I start having anxiety at the mere thought of leaving my parents and living in dorms every single summer and every time I visit home. Is this normal? Does anyone have any suggestions that can help me?

P.S. Staying at home and studying is impossible because I don't have any colleges near my house. Also, my current college is like 2 and half to 3 hours away. .

Does the anxiety last throughout the whole school year, or is it only present when you think about leaving home? If it is only present at the end of summer/breaks, then I would say this is normal. A few days before I leave home I always start to feel a little bit queasy at the idea of leaving, but when I actually get back to school and get back into the swing of things I’m absolutely fine. So if this is the case for you, then you’re not the only one!

Even if this is not the case, and you are always feeling anxious and want to go home when you’re at school, there are things you can do to help this feeling of anxiety. Talk to your family every day; whether it’s a text message, a Skype call, or a phone call, your parents miss you and they want to know that you’re feeling okay when you’re at school. You could keep a journal to maybe help yourself figure out why you’re missing home so much, and alone might be enough to help you rationalize your feelings. I always tell myself that I can go home whenever I want, even if it’s a Tuesday night. If I really need to drop everything and go home, I can. Lastly, there is no shame in talking to a counselor about how you’re feeling. Telling someone else about what your experiencing could help you quell your anxiety.

I hope some of this helped, but the bottom line is that this is normal and there are ways to help overcome it. Sometimes anxiety is not as simple as just “getting over it.” Sometimes people need medical treatment to help calm themselves down, and I’m not saying that you do. Just consider all of your options. Good luck!
