Anxious Mode... some Transfer Questions

Ok, so I went off to school this Fall and I just finished my first semester at college. And I want to transfer, however, if I choose not to go back for Spring Semester and opt to backpack across Europe or do something else, but I want admission for Fall 07, because of my lack of a full year of college will I start as a Freshman, or does it depend on each university's policy?

Am I ever really allowed to be a full fleged freshman again, or have I thrown away any hope of this by having gone off to school just for this semester.
I guess I'm just wondering because if I have no chance of that then I'll go back Spring Semester and then I'll try and just transfer in normally.

I've looked at several schools websites but the answers are often varied and vague, I was wondering if there was a more standard policy.

I don't even know if this is so much Transfer, but I know I can't apply as a Freshman again, but if I transfer with a lack of credits, what happens?

I'm just anxious, I'm not really sure what I'm doing with my life anymore, and since the time machine option is several hundred years out, I'm wondering what I can do to 'restart' this college thing.

in college there's no such thing as freshman, sophomore etc really. You're graduating class is considered by how many credits you have. So yes, with one semester you'd likely be considered a freshman. Same goes for someone who would have been a 2010 grad but took summer classes every year and had enough credits to graduate early. So it isn't by year, but by credits.
