Any 2012 College Graduation Stories to Tell?

D’s graduation was last weekend. Perfect weather! The speaker was Neil Howe, author of a lot of stuff including the term “Millennial Generation”. He was excellent. Besides being brief and funny, he compared youth to people who stay in a hotel room. They are there for awhile and then they move on. Some are noisy, some silent, some angry, some playful. He made many comparisons between the grads and parents that we all could relate to.

I said this on the rant thread but I’ll whine again. D’s name was omitted from the Phi Beta Kappa list. A girl with the same first name was listed twice instead. Does anyone proofread any more???

That stinks, zoedoggie. But you know. That’s what matters. My s has the wrong color tassel.

In S’s college degrees are awarded one department at a time. All the department chairs sit on the stage and get up in turn to shake hands with the graduates of their program. DH is a chair in the college, but DS is in a different department. It was very sweet for me when, after S went through the receiving line of deans and the head of his department, DH stood and gave him a big hug.

That is sweet about your DH. We are here now. Ds is apparently going at the end, as his college is at the end. But now he has the right color tassel.

Enjoy the moment and the jazz. When S1 graduated in '09 there was a sweet trumpet solo at the beginning; it turned out Wynton Marsalis was getting an honorary degree. He played “When the Saints . . .” at the closing. It was marvelous.

At D’s graduation, the Phi Beta Kappa kids were recognized by name and asked to stand. D was initiated into PBK at her school in November of her senior year.

DD is graduating mid next month. I hope we could attend the graduation w/o breaking the bank.

We had always wait until the last minutes to book our travel using priceline. To my surprise, I could not get a room $30 ~40 higher than what we used to pay. Turns out, the “US Open” is on the exact same 4 days and all hotels are charging 2X higher price if they have any room left.

So, finding a hotel room is becoming a story by itself.

S2’s graduation was this past weekend. He actually graduated in Dec, but was going through the ceremonies now, probably more to satisfy M & D than because he really wanted to. At least, that’s what we thought. It turns out he was pretty excited about all the hoopla after all (other than some of the speeches) and we have proof. We already got the proofs of the professional photos taken as they cross the stage & get their (fake) diploma. The look of joy on his face when he’s shaking hands with the dean is a look we rarely see with him. Going to graduation was definitely worth it.
