Any 2015-2016 USC RHP Applicants?

Is anyone here applying for the Resident Honors Program at USC for the 2015-2016 school year? I'm pretty early but oh well haha. I wonder how competitive RHP really is- I called the office and they said a little more than 100 students apply every year, and 20-30 make it, but I don't want to be too overconfident????

Anyone that is in RHP, or goes to USC, how is it? :)

I’m applying too! I just got something in the mail about it. Not sure how many applicants either, but I wish I knew so that I could get a more accurate vision of the possibilities. Good luck to you! And who knows, maybe we’ll be classmates next fall!
My SAT tutor was in the program and she absolutely loved it. One thing that’s great about the program (something I didn’t see mentioned on the site) is RHP students don’t take the same mandatory 101 classes the other students do. Instead, they are offered accelerated courses in the same subjects and are held to a high standard. As for the whole no diploma thing, after your freshman year is over, someone from USC can contact your high school about the requirements for graduation, so it’s possible to get credits for high school while getting credits as a college student. Honestly, I think this program is the bee’s knees. My fingers are crossed for the both of us! Any questions, feel free to message me. :)

That sounds so awesome! I’m so glad you’re applying too- hopefully we’ll both get in! And whoa I didn’t know about the accelerated courses- I only had a vague idea about the Thematic Option stuff lolol. Thank you so much!

I’m filling out the Common App right now and it feels so weird, I didn’t think I’d be doing this until next year :))

Hi! I can’t say I know anything about it, but I got an invitation in the mail and was thinking of applying too. Do you have your stats?

@rubi99‌ Same! I have no idea what to put for the educational interruption. Should I answer yes and specify the RHP? This is surreal. Have you taken the SAT yet? I’m taking it on October 11th for the first time and now that I have the 2050 number in my head, I’ve been working my butt off. Thematic Option is the part I’m a little fuzzy on.
@abbiejlee How many people got invitations and how did they find us??? haha :)

@abbiejlee‌ Yeah! So my school calculates weighted and unweighted GPA on a 6.0 scale, and I’m not really sure what the difference is or anything so I’ll just try convert them to a 4.0 scale:

Weighted GPA: 3.53, in the top 8% (IDK if this is lower/higher than the 4.3 average that was on the RHP website because I have no idea how to convert. Ugh why can’t everyone use the same scale)

I got a 2200 on the last practice SAT I took and a 30 on this ACT Plan Test my school had (I have to work to improve this one LOL).

I have a lot of extracurriculars (I’m the President/Founder of a Youth Chapter of Akshaya Patra, I’m an officer of the Business Professionals of America club, I’m secretary of MUN, and there are several other things), so hopefully that’ll work in my favor! What are your stats?

@eldixon‌ ARGH I didn’t know what to put for that either! And oh my god the common app literally asks you for soooo many things. Also, for extracurriculars, if you’re planning to participate during 11th grade, do you still check the 11th grade box or do you just check it for 9th-10th grade? D: And ok I haven’t taken the SAT yet but I took a practice one (the 2200 I got was the highest score I got and idk if I’ll be able to get it again), but apparently the average for RHP was a 2250…

I’ll call them on Tuesday and ask about TO! I think we’re required to take it if we get in. Oh, and about invitations… so, usually, I would say that they found us through college board (that box we had to check when we took the PSAT let college board give our info to different places), but apparently, college board doesn’t give practice test scores to colleges through that program? idk i’m really confused maybe they performed a summoning or used some ancient magic

They do get PSAT scores from College Board.

@abbiejlee‌ My stats aren’t great. I’ve got a 3.84 unweighted and 4.4 weighted. I got a 5 on AP Psych

Practice ACT 32
PSAT 1990?, but on the latest I’ve taken around 2190.
I’m sure I’m forgetting some stuff, and I feel so crappy about the 2 Bs I got freshman year. D:

@rubi99‌ Wow, so impressive! :D

I haven’t taken the actual SAT yet, but I’ve been doing SAT prep with Elite. My highest score so far on the practice tests has been a 2390, but on average I’m in the 2300 range. I took the PSAT last year and got a 209.

Unweighted GPA: 4.00
Weighted GPA: 4.57

I’ve been team captain of the JV basketball team for two years, and this year I’m playing on varsity. I’ll probably be captain this year as well.

I’ve did student government freshman and sophomore year. This year I am the Director of Finances (Treasurer) on the ASB board.

I’m part of Pink Ribbon Club, NHS, NAHS, and Key Club (which I might be a co-president for this year. Not sure yet).

I’m still not sure if I’ll apply because as much as it’s exciting to think about starting college a year early, I don’t want to move on too quickly, and I want to gain more experience, maybe see what other offers I get, as USC is not one of my top choices.

@eldixon‌ I think it’s from our test scores. Most likely last years PSAT.

@eldixon‌ It seems like everyone has so many extracurriculars and clubs and whatnot. It’s more difficult for me to be as involved because I go to a small private school, and the student population is less than 500. I’m still really impressed by your stats.

@abbiejlee‌ @eldixon‌ Whoaaaa you gooo!! you guys are so smart!

I have a question: are you going to submit your common app/mail in your application in November, or are you going to do it earlier? I think we’re supposed to send it later so that we can show them our junior year grades too but idk???

BTW, how did you guys calculate your unweighted and weighted GPA? I’m not really sure what mine would be on a 5.0 scale. I could only find a 6.0 to 4.0 converter LOL

A day late to the party, but I am applying!

My GPA a little off but I’m hoping test scores + upward trend + passion for business will help me through. Program is incredible- I almost cannot believe it isn’t a scam.

@rubi99‌ for a 5.0 scale, add an extra point all ap / ib classes. So a B in AP Psych would be a 3 on a 4.0 scale, but a 4 on a 5.0 scale. All on level classes follow the 1-4 point model.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think USC weights honors courses as well? In which case, Honors English would follow the same model as AP psych.

@peytonelizabeth That’s awesome! I’m into business too  and ohhh okay! Thanks!

Yeah when I first read the letter, it sounded like just another scam program LOL. But then I researched more about it and I was totally impressed!

Do we specify that we’re applying to RHP somewhere on the Common App that I’m not seeing?

@peytonelizabeth‌ I don’t think so… but there’s a section that asks if you’re graduating early and I don’t know if we’re supposed to put that we’re applying to college early there…

@rubi99 I don’t think that really applies either because we technically would not be graduating… hmmm… maybe I am just paranoid.

Students,
If you have questions call or write the admissions office. They are there to give you assistance with these questions. If there is a particular situation unique to your school it is possible to write a formal letter of explanation or inquiry.

This is a well respected program for those students who are ready for a college experience a year early. SC has had RHP in place for a long time. Some nearby students do return to respective high schools/prep schools for prom and graduation ceremonies.

The applicant pool is somewhat self selective. Students apply who are motivated and feel ready for advanced learning challenges. Best candidates, in my opinion, are those who are searching for a more challenging academic environment, have had positive experiences away from home, feel comfortable with adults, seek research opportunities, wish access to advanced technology or feel ready to try innovative programs in a top global oriented university.

how are the apps going??

Finished mine  all I need is my SAT score, which is coming out in a few days!
