I’d say a 3.7 to 3.9 is average with decent ECs. I’ve only been in one academic comp myself.

4.0 could be considered average as well considering how many people with those stats apply. T_T Unless one has stellar ECs and perf scores to go with the awesome GPA. Still a toss up even then. But, regardless, I’m average. ^▁^

Yeah would having French as my first language and being Canadian help me at all? I take Spanish in high school so I kind of know 3 languages. Also I have really good awards in soccer for both club and high school. Athletes usually aren’t the brightest people who are applying to harvard. Besides the recruits, are there many people who excel at sports applying to HYP? Or will my soccer not even help me?

@FutureDocSauve If you didn’t win any major award/recognition in soccer at state or national level, the sport will definitely still help but not much (think about this, there are thousands of varsity soccer players out there in the nation; what makes you stand out among them?). In addition, many applicants will know multiple languages. If you are really good at a sport but not at the recruit-level yet, then you better have good grades and scores.

Well I have gotten recruited by d1 schools already but I want to go to an ivy. I talked to the coaches and they said they just wrapped up their 2013 recruiting class. and my club team is super good as we have won state, gotten third at regionals, and beaten the 2nd best team and 11th best team in the nation. We were ranked 9th in the nation at one point. I play in the highest league in region 2. For high school I have gotten individual first team awards as well as a state finalist 2 years ago.

I’m valedictorian in a class of 300 with a 4.00, but I’d say I’m “average” based on a 2190 SAT and a list of ECs that has more quantity than quality. Incredibly nervous.

@philan. I live in the United States and am a permanent resident for 12 years. If anything, it will help me since I know French and overcame learning English and getting a 33 on that ACT section… Right?

Nice GPA. As a valedictorian, I’d say you’re competitive. Scores aren’t everything. And, imo, GPA > SAT scores. But, if you’re really feeling down about that score, have you considered retaking? Any hooks?

I was born in Canada but I have lived in the United States since I was 5. I’m a permanent resident and we pay U.S. taxes… How can I be international? I live in the nation!!!

@alexissss Thanks, and yes I originally got a 2060, retook and got a 2190…so I don’t see myself improving much more. Unfortunately, not even the slightest hook haha. White male from CT, married parents with household income around $100,000 - the epitome of the American middle class lifestyle, really screws me for some of these schools lol. Good luck to you all though.

Yes, definitely (below) average application over here! Just a 31 on ACT and 1950 on SAT and 4.0 GPA unweighted. Applied Early Action just to see what happens. I guess some of my hooks are that I’m a female Indian/Pakistani American-born who has a lower income family budget and has a job that helps provide for the family. I wouldn’t really consider them hooks that would make me stand out. In fact, I believe that because I’m Indian/Pakistani, I’m expected to have higher scores. I was kind of thinking that because I want to major in the field of astronomy and because some research indicates that there aren’t many in the astrophysics concentration at Harvard, I might have a chance. I’d have to say that I do A LOT of after school activities that involve raising awareness of many issues and have exposed myself to leadership opportunities.
I am now looking at things with the concept that I’m proud of what I’ve done and if I’m worried about being unsuccessful, it won’t be because I didn’t attend Harvard or any ivy league, but it’ll be the mentality that only ivy league universities can bring me success. I truly believe that anyone with the credentials that have been stated in this forum is going to be quite successful. Everyone here has the drive to do well!
