You can be at Altoona & still go to Smeal?
Hmm...cause I put Altoona as my backup campus.

cwryan1, gosh, my son's is 1190 (1720/2400 best sitting)with a 4.23 W. he shows up well within the blue range, but do they plug in a formula to even out the gpa's across the board ? or do they look at the gpa at face value ? ... they say they look into each student's app for various factors....and that is why it takes so long.

well they look at the writing too now so that could've had something to do with it if he didnt do so well on that.
and i know skullduggery, it's very worrisome and disappointing. i haven't heard of anyone being accepted into summer session yet..anyone?
and for whoever wanted to get into purdue, i got in like a month ago with a 3.5 and a 1760 on my SAT's so i'm sure you will be fine. but i have to agree. i went to visit earlier this year and i didn't really connect either. it was nice but it's not my first choice and i think i've ruled it out at this point

If you applied before the November 30th deadline and have not heard yet, do you think it's safe to say you will be atleast accepted to your alternate campus choice? I can't see them denying anyone from the whole school this late.

they don't deny anyone from the school. you get a branch even if you don't put it down. they still say "please consider one of our branch campuses" etc etc
so yeah, we'll get branch campus if we're not good enough for UP

Responses:

*psualum80- oh my... that is disappointing, especially if that was his #1 choice. he is taking the same math class as my son.... do you know to which college at psu he applied ?

He applied to UP as first choice campus obviously, and Altoona as his second choice campus. I don't think he applied to any other colleges either because he said he was going to Penn State no matter what. I'm not sure what college he applied to, he said he put down business. I didn't ask any further questions because a couple minutes after he found out he wasn't accepted to UP, he left the room :/ It could be possible that his writing score was low, as I know he is very good at math.

*Skullduggery:All of this talk of above-average students being rejected is getting really, really worrisome. :/

I know what you mean! It is very very stressful! I check my status roughly five times a day, even knowing that it only gets changed before 8am!

*Penn State does not reject ANY applicant. You will be referred to a branch campus. Believe me, I know a lot of "not the brightest tool in the shed" kind of kids who went to Hazleton this year.
*I am noticing that it is very difficult to be accepted to UP this year. I was speaking to a friend who is a Freshman at UP now, and her SATs (CR and Math, individually) were in the 400s/500s based on the 1600 scale. She is also from PA, and she was in the National Honor Society, didn't take any APs, but was involved in several extra-curriculars. It's really hard to tell!

Ah! I forgot that they're including the writing score in their decisions -- I got a 730 on my writing section (11 essay), maybe that will help, tooo! I only got a 1940, but that's because I am horrid at math. :/

Not accepted into UP, have my pick at any other campus.

1290/1600
1910/2400
3.55/4.6

When did you find out and did you have any alumni?

found out this morning, no alumni

dchurg: I am VERY surprised that you did not get in with those stats. Are you sure your weighted GPA was submitted? Perhaps just your UW just was.

I really dont know. I was disappointed I did not get in but not surprised. On the bubble chart I had 2 yellow above and below where I fell. Since it was the first school I got denied from I got really nervous that I would not be accepted any where =)...Kind of calmed down now lol..anyone want to chance me for univ Maryland, Northeastern, boston univeristy, rutgers, american or babson? =)...Also I am not happy I got denied but do not mind it so much as I was not really even going to consider going there. I guess it is better that someone who really wants it can go there now.

dchurg--

what major were you trying for and did you choose summer?

Chose summer, also did business but they give you a number to call to change major for re-evaluation and they said major was irrelevant in decision.

I would bet that your school only submitted your UW GPA. I had the same weighted GPA and SATs and was accepted to UP + SHC.

Rutgers is an awesome school, it was my close second. Good luck!

wow dchburg...i am extremely surprised you did not get in!!! are you a criminal or something??? jkjk but personally, I would not sweat it, as you will be able to get in somewhere very good anyway... Best of luck to you!

for all of you who got denied, did your psu accounts say you are denied or you just found out by mail?

dchurg OMG...can't believe you didn't get into UP. My stats are very similar to yours! Now, I'm scared. Did you take a lot of APs or Honors? Good ECs, etc?

But, my brother went to PSU...so alumni...does that help for me?

yes alumni helps

Reading these horror stories, I don't know what to make of PSU-UP. My D1 is a soph at PSU-Lehigh Valley. She was denied at UP, but tells me she would not have gone. She wants to remain at LV campus for her remaining two years, even though she is supposed to now move to UP for the fall. She loves the small commuter campus at LV. It's set on the top of a hill surrounded by big expensive homes. But here's the thing: two years ago D1 was rejected by UP, which was not a shock because of her 2.7 GPA. Now she could graduate from UP but doesn't want to. Yet, two years ago, with a 2.7 GPA, she was accepted at Michigan State and U of Wisconsin-Madison. No honors, no APs. Madison was especially a shock because it is ranked higher than PSU-UP. I guess she wrote a terrific essay or something. D1 has a better GPA at PSU-LV than she did in high school, and received a partial scholarship, although I can pay full freight. It's weird.

Now along comes her sister, D2, who is NHS, Top 15%, terrific ECs, and I'm nervous she won't get into UP but might get into schools like Cornell, Amherst and Brown. This makes no sense! I don't get how UP makes their decisions. Yes, we are PA residents too.
