We're in PA and I've been watching PSU admissions at our local high school for a few years. I think it's getting harder to get in...especially for certain programs like business and engineering. But it certainly is not as difficult as Cornell or Brown. Not even close.
But PSU admissions are numbers oriented (with the exception of the honors college). Students with sparkling ECs including lots of leadership, high SAT scores and and average GPAs might just get into a Cornell while rejected by PSU - VERY unlikely though.
Plainsman, I think your D will be fine as long as her GPA is over 3.5.
It will be interesting to see how many apps they got this year...between the economy and the good football year...records might be set.

I got in three days ago! I got into the University Park campus for the fall of '09

Toneranger: My D's GPA is 3.7, unweighted. But her SAT's weren't the best. Fortunately she also took the ACTs and did better on it. I'm still worried. What's taking so long? Her file was complete on November 3rd!

She didn't put down a major. I think that uncertainty has hurt her. I've heard decisions are made by college within the U, so if you don't know which college you want to be in, they don't have anyone to say "yes" or "no." I'm guessing, of course. But this is a really long time to wait.

Nerner: Congratulations on your admission!

nerner, which college within psu did you apply ?

i don't think they decide by major, i really think it's just random

is it possible to get re-evaluated?

I got into Altoona and my friend got into UP

His grades vs mine
Me: 3.38 GPA vs his 3.32 GPA
SAT: my 1710/2400 vs his 1590/2400
NO EC's for both.

The weirdest part is that we both put down summer session. I wasn't even offered summer session and he was not either; they put him straight into Fall.

Nope, no chance for Re-Eval. Either he had a higher weighted GPA that you don't know about and/or they just liked him better. :P

lol cwryan... unfortunately, these things can often be luck of the draw!

blckthought, It was probably that he did have a higher weighted gpa. You had higher scores, but the gpa is 2/3 of the admission decision. Unfortunately, there are too many qualified applicants to University Park and everyone can't get accepted. I wish you the best wherever you decide to go.

Wow, what's with these admissions...?
The better stats aren't getting into the main campus & the lower ones are?
Now, I'm super scared for my decision.

I was rejected for summer admission to UP, and was offered admission at Hazleton for fall.
You can find my stats in my profile. Good luck to everyone else.

Mot likely your SATs, PSILoveU, that got you deferred to a branch.

PS I Love U did you hear in the mail or online? My son is still waiting and is now pretty convinced he will be deferrred to another campus. He has a 90W GPA and about a 1900 SAT. Good ECs and work. Allof is paperwork was in by Oct 1. He didn't put down summer or another campus, but would do summer now since things seem bleak.

I received notification this morning online.

I am pretty much "screwed" because I was hoping for UP and had only applied to PSU. I applied to Drexel only because they offered a free application. Now I'm in a rut, and am trying to find other schools and quickly applying.

I wish all the best to those who are still waiting.

Thanks . Our status still says under review. What did you put down for a major? There seems to be no rhyme or reason to who is accepted and who isn't. Sorry you didn't get into Up. Is Hazelton an option for you? Is thedre another campus other than that that you might prefer and can you call and ask for it? Do you think being instate hurt your chances? Once my son sees this he is really going to freak. He is obesses with Penn and UP in particular. Doesn't look good for his chances. Once again so sorry you didn't get in. Good luck with your hunt for schools. What about UD or U mass?

I don't understand how you got deferred to another campus with these stats. I got in 2 years ago with 4.0w/1100m&v/1660m&v&w. I guess you were shy of 40 points in the writing section. :(

Thanks for the sympathy.

I applied Undecided (DUS) for summer session. First choice, UP, and second choice, Hazleton. * I wanted to start in the summer as I've heard it was a great experience for everyone that I have talked to who went to summer. I was also looking to do LEAP, but looks like that won't be happening.

My brother went to Penn State, and graduated about 3 years ago. He went to PSU Hazleton for his first two years & UP the last two years. He said that if I was going to accept PSU's offer, I should change to Altoona. He really did not like Hazleton all that much - in fact, he was home almost every weekend. So, I called up admissions and they said it was possible to switch campuses.

Honestly, I think the reason for all of these rejections is because of the number of applicants. The fact that Penn State's football team did really well this year and that they have become the #1 party school makes it very attractive to any high school senior who is looking for that type of experience. I talked to a girl who went to my school last year, and her SATs were in the 400s-500s range for each category. It's very upsetting... It makes it very hard for me because I only applied to PSU and Drexel. I don't really want to go to Drexel because I know that I won't get a "college" experience with football, etc. The other problem is that it is January 21, and most schools deadlines have passed or very near to being met. I'm probably just going to end up going to Altoona....

Just a thought... Has anyone heard of someone transferring to UP after their first year?

PS I LOVE YOU- From what I heard I don't believe you can transfer from another Penn State campus to UP after one year if you were turned down to UP orginally. I guess that's the whole 2 + 2 plan. As far as I've heard. Only after 2 years can you transfer. I believe it's okay if you are transfering from another college after only one year. Not 100% on these facts, but it's seems to be the general answer on theses boards.

Thanks for the input, LTMREM.

I didnt get into Main and i have a 3.72 GPA and a 1510/2400 with a ton of EC's and volunteer, i chose summer as well. I applied college of education. what makes me angry, is that kids in my grade who have the 4.5GPA and the 2000/2400 SATs applied to PSU with no intention of going there. They only apply cause they can. Thats why its tougher this year, because of these kids who just do it cause they wanna just show people they got into main, while kids like us who truley want to go to main cant because of them
