Hey, how accurate is that bubble chart anyway ? I wonder what is the cut off for fall vs. summer admittance ? If you are in the blue are you "safe" ?

I believe if you are in the "blue region" you are "safe" for Fall especially for Summer. For summer, I'd say you can go into the top 2-3 yellow dots, but you should only use the chart for estimates and not guarantees.

My D is OOS with the following basic stats:

3.87 UW GPA
10 or so of 425 students in senior class
ACT composite of 30 (32 English, 31 Math)

AVID rugby player and attended the PSU camp this summer. Her team has reached state semi-finals two years running. Lettered in soccer four years, making all district team last two years, district MVP and regional team honors this year.

Worked part time (15 hours a week) throughout junior and senior years with many EC associations at school.

Does not have time for much else besides her guitars.

She completed her application in mid-October with transcript sent in within a week or so. She has already gained an admittance from Tulane.

Would love to hear when other OOS-ers receive any form of acceptance communications. She is getting tired of seeing, "Your application has been received and is being reviewed. Thank you for applying to Penn State." on the status page.

I just spoke to someone in admissions... she said that article doesn't fully explain how they approach all of this. Those numbers in the article (5,600) mostly reflect a bulk of the branch campus students since their housing is very limited. She said the upper echelon of kids are hearing and they work their way through the rest. People will hear by Jan. 31. UGH. She said rolling admissions means you can send the app in anytime, but it doesn't necessarily mean you will hear back the same way.

I think 'rolling admissions' is actually somewhat misleading. To me, rolling admissions means sort of first come, first served; as long as you meet a 'criteria' that they have established, you get in, and the earlier you get your app in the better. Applications would be reviewed in order received, and a decision made on you. It seems as though PSU is really doing what most other schools do, except that they are releasing their decisions on a rolling basis, and not on a set date. I'd be curious to know if they have outright rejected anyone yet.

Actually, one of my son's friends was rejected from Smeal. His friend applied not realizing how competitve it is... he has a gpa of 3.0. Seems like PSU probably sorted through all of the really high stats and really low stats first.

pitt2009 i think you will definitely get in.
does anyone have any friends who have done summer session? do those people who get accepted there hear later?

my friend said that she heard around thanksgiving and her other friend heard early december.....do you think i can get in 1510/2400, 3.72, in state, 8 honors, 1 AP, tons of Ec's and volunteer and work hours.

GPA: 3.74 (uw) / 4.00
SAT: 2270 -- 800 (M), 740 (R), 730 (W)
Classes: 3 APs this year (6 total), rest are Honors or Advanced

ECs (although I hear Penn doesn't put much stock into them): only 3, but heavily volunteer-related, however I also work 3x/week (10 - 15 hrs)

Status: OOS
Accepted into: University Park, Engineering Program

I sent my application three weeks ago, so I was surprised when the letter came in the mail. Sadly, Penn State is not my first choice. I applied to five other schools, my number one being Santa Clara U (others are VTech, UVA, Johns Hopkins, UMD).

Out of curiosity, did anyone else get accepted into the Engineering Program, and if so, what do you intend to study?

I'm attempting Bio, but I could switch to Mechanical since my interests lie in AI, Robotics, and prosthetics.

Thanks and congrats to you both! We will keep waiting for that big fat envelope on this end. She applied as a Psych major and has athletic department involvement. Could that be holding it up?

I do think the major applied for has something to do with it. It seems like a lot of engineering students have heard already. I was told nursing wouldn't be until after the application deadline since they accept so few. I was also told at summer days at Penn State that even if she doesn't get into the major she wants, she would still be accepted into Penn State.
