Still trying to see what stats it takes to get the "best" Presidential Scholarship (you know...the biggun...in the $25,000/year range). Any of you 2014 EDers received that yet, or would it only come later once the whole class was established? I know NYU tends to practice "hybrid aid"-where you get scholarships if you have merit...AND need. I'm just curious if anyone can tell if it seems they look more at standardized scores, GPA...or use that proverbial holistic approach to determine their top 4-5% for Honors...and then WHERE do they go from there for the scholarships (top <1% of class I'm sure, but WHAT statistics do you think they use). I've seen one person's stats in Steinhardt and they weren't "that" high. But then I also see someone on here posted that they got a NICE CAS scholarship with a 36 ACT (of course). So...anyone know if we're pretty much talking only PERFECT scores then, right? 4.0 PLUS 36 or 4.0 PLUS 2350+?

I got the Steinhardt scholarship for 10K (something I didn’t know existed) and I have around a 3.3 and a 28 ACT…

Yeah…I heard of someone who got a similar scholarship at Steinhardt. But I was really wondering where that breaking point was for CAS and the BIG one. I think my D will be admitted, I hope for honors, but I don’t think there is a snowball’s chance in …Hades that she could get enough money that we could afford it. It’s going to be a LONG winter. Just wondered how far below “perfect” they went for the big CAS Presidential top scholy (it was $25,000…but I’ve heard it’s morphed into about $32,000…but that’s probably not as a freshman…I know it increased for this person each year as tuition went up). Her ACT is 34 but I just don’t think that’s going to cut it. And I know that probably no one knows the “magic formula”…just thought I might be able to figure one out from stats. But…anyway. Thanks for sharing but mostly CONGRATS on your STeinhardt scholarship!!!

Yeah, I completely understand. It’s really tough. Has she applied for any outside scholarships? There are a bunch out there, FastWeb is a great source for that kind of stuff.

I don’t think any other scholly’s will make a big enough dent. She should hopefully get National Merit Finalist but that’s such a tiny amount. She’s eligible for some health issue scholarships but they’re not “open” yet. Was HOPING that the top 1% ACT might mean something, but…probably not.

So…no…if NYU’s scholarships aren’t big enough she’ll just have to stay at state Uni. Already has 3 scholarships there, expecting one more and has a very good chance at a fifth that will make it BEYOND free (money and computers and such thrown in). So…that’s her fallback. Can’t complain…it’s all good.

NYU for grad school then - hopefully. And that is a great thing to look forward to! No worries (hah!)

With a 34 she could probably get a big presidential scholarship!

I received 25k a year - I’ve got a 3.82 UW GPA, a 36 on the ACT, and am a National Merit Semifinalist - and I just retook the SAT and got a 2260, so I’ll probably be a finalist. Given that my ACT score was the most impressive thing on my transcript BY FAR, I think that really is what did it… She should definitely get a decent amount with a 34!

Also, keep in mind not all Finalists get the $2500 merit scholarships - and it might even be better if she doesn’t, because NYU has the Baird scholarship. No idea how much, but hey - can’t hurt!

Thanks, “guitar”…it was YOUR earlier post about a “big” scholarship that made me ask. But I knew you got a 36. I know 34 is still top 1%, but…? She got 2210 on SAT as a Jr. (780/750 SAT IIs). So hopefully she’s a finalist.

I know about the Baird PROGRAM (of travel) which looks GREAT. But…it’s the money we need.

And I’ve heard that, for the top scholarship, you need to exhibit both merit AND need for them to offer that much. That sometimes they offer less to people with similar stats and higher income. Ours “looks” higher, but I’m self employeed (double taxation) and have over $20,000 a year in medical expenses (long story).

The biggest problem by far is her GPA. She WAS top 10 ish kids at her school (of 500) but changed high schools midyear in 10th grade and (another long story) had a horrid semester including a C+ and some Bs which RUINED her GPA. She’s back to 3.9 now of course (4.9 weighted), but she could never mathmatically recover from that one semester and has a lousy rank (still top 10%, but…we need top 1%!) and 3.6975 overall (I know…it looks like she’s bright but lazy and nothing could be more false). I’m hoping they’ll see that she moved, and consider it, but…everyone has problems and she felt it was whining if she explained her bad semester. So…who knows.

So thanks for all the responses…guess I’ll hope now more than despair. That’ll get us through the season with better cheer. Now if I could just get her to wear something other than that purple T-shirt for awhile! She gets these lovely mailings and recruitment “gifts” from our state Uni and she very sadly says “awww, that’s so nice of them” and hangs her head and wishes it was purple.

Congrats to y’all again! And have (or hope you had) great holidays.
