Eagles, no one here can answer that question, because things change from year to year. If you’re looking to take the easy way out, you’re succeeding, but it’s risky.

Because Pitts admissions are rolling, the later you wait the less likely your chance of admission. If you are really interested in Pitt, I would apply now.

Eagles - just do it. Pitts app is easy compared to many. If you already have your essay done you are most of the way there. December is a long way away. No one said this process was easy, most worthwhile things aren’t

There was an admin counsler at my hs today, and he said they were going to start looking at school of arts/sciences apps next week.

Thanks 1234…although I think it will end up being Penn State or Mizzou (lots of $$$ from Mizzou - will be hard to turn down…)

My daughter got her admission letter today - honors program. The letter said that we would hear about scholarship money at a later date.

Evidently they have already started. Allowing time for mail delivery…probably last week.

if you are anxious, you can call Pitt admissions and find out whether a decision has been reached on your application. They won’t tell you whether it is yes or no, just whether the letter is in the mail!

PS- as of yesterday- our daughter’s application was still pending.

Who did you speak to? Did your daughter get any email from them as of yet?

I just called and used the menu options to speak to an admissions representative. They checked her status, and no decision has been reached. Decisions are communicated by regular mail, not email or the website.

This is none of my business, but as long as you have confirmation that the application was received, I would recommend waiting patiently for now and not calling the admissions office. Thousands and thousands of applications are processed by Pitt every year, and if people start calling, that will just delay everything. And it’s very early in the cycle, not even mid-October! Patience and managing anxiety are a big part of the admissions process.

They seem to have plenty of people manning phones in the admissions office; I don’t think the people manning the phones are the same ones who review applications. They are there to answer questions about application status, whether items are missing, etc. That’s their job. The person I spoke with was very helpful and actually offered to check my daughter’s status without my asking. So don’t hesitate to call if you are anxious- they don’t mind receiving the call at all. I have found Pitt overall very pleasant to deal with!

I agree with Lurkness, there really is no need to be calling asking if your letter is in the mail esp this early in the application season. Compared to some other schools, Pitt’s adcoms have a very quick decision turnaround.

It doesn’t matter to me whether people call or not. I will say that if Pitt was concerned about wasting the time of the people in admissions answering calls they would utilize an on-line admissions status system like most other colleges their size. Evidently they are not concerned about people calling.

They do… there’s a “Student Applicants” section on my.pitt.edu for applicants to check if their app is complete. I remember getting a login for this when I applied but their decision came fast enough that I didn’t use it very much. Calling to see if a letter is in the mail is (IMO) unnecessary.

the online status only tells you whether your application is complete- it doesn’t indicate whether you have been accepted/rejected- for that they are relying on snail mail. If they wanted to avoid these calls, they’d simply notify online like Penn State does. And, as I mentioned above, they people answering the phones were very courteous and did not seem at all annoyed by the call.

Of the schools that my son applied to last year, the vast majority had some form of online status notification system in place. However, more than half of those were only notifying you if/when our application is complete, so Pitt is not alone in this practice. Furthermore, even those that notified you of their decision online didn’t update the status to say “your letter is in the mail.” The one notable exception was the University of Southern California, which had waaay too many status updates, many of which were cryptic, defied logic, or both. They were driving everyone on the USC forum crazy and, year after year, elicit 50+ pages of posts from people who are desperately trying to decipher them. So be careful what you’re asking for :)

That said, I can totally understand how, as time goes by, people are getting more and more anxious to get their decisions. Just realize that being notified online vs. by mail will only shorten your wait by a few days. Plus, you’ll likely have to wait until March or April of next year for most of your other schools…

Good luck, everyone!

Shorten the wait and lessen the number of calls that Pitt admissions receives. My experience last year with 10 colleges for my daughter was considerably different that yours. Almost all provided on-line acceptance status notifications and then snail mail letters within a week or two.

About half the schools my son applied to last year had on-line or e-mail admissions notifications. The rest only some sort of on-line information that the application was complete.

A fun (?) part of the process was waiting for him to come home to open the mail when college letters were there. No one else was allowed to touch them.

I just called and asked the status of my app, they said it was in the mail!
