hi everyone, 1 more week before DePauw Early Action deadline.
i'm kinda confused whether or not I should apply EA to DePauw.
I'm an international student.
so I'm wondering if there is any advantage of applying EA to DePauw?

DePauw, like most others schools, only breaks out their acceptance rate for ED applicants so any statistical advantage to applying Early Action can’t be quantified. However, if your application is ready, why not submit it? There is no downside to EA unless your application and materials are not completed.

i’m afraid that since not many people apply EA, the school can’t compare me with other RD applicants.
unlike ED which can be deferred to RD, EA as I know, has no such policy… so i’m kinda scared

btw, it seems like DePauw doesn’t require any supplemental essay, does it? the supplemental does not say anything

but there;s a mention of somekind of written sample or a response to a question on the depauw website…do we need to work on that if we’re submitting the common application??

There is a writing sample required. It is an additional essay but I am not sure if it is in the Common App or supplement.

If you are not accepted as an EA applicant, you will likely be deferred into the RD round. EA applicants, like ED applicants, that are not accepted are deferred into RD assuming that the applicants credentials are strong enough for consideration. The bottom line is that you do not hurt yourself applying EA.

oh *****
i alr submitted everything without knowing that there was an additional essay… what should I do now? 4 more days to write it and send? how to send? fax? email???

I would send an e-mail ASAP to your Admissions Counselor. They could give you the best advice. Remember though that it may be difficult to get an answer since Thanksgiving is tomorrow and many people are leaving early today and may be out Friday. You may actually want to call them and ask for assistance since somebody in Admissions might be in that can help you.

I applied back in September through the CommonApp and just found out today about the additional writing sample. I feel awful. I sent an admissions officer an email asking if there is anything that I can do. Why wouldn’t they mention it somewhere on the supplement portion? Gahhh… I just blew my chances.

Maggiemay, I would not get too worried. This also happened with my D. She noticed the required writing sample on the application checklist on their web site after she submitted her application. She did not see it before than and only noticed it the day before the EA deadline. She e-mailed her Admissions Counselor to see if she could send him a graded paper and he responded that there was no need since her application was complete. D did not submit an additional writing sample but she had an essay in her commonapp. My guess is they counted that sample. You are right though, this requirement should be directly on the supplement. It is confusing the way it is set up.

Let us know what your AdCon advises. Good luck

I emailed the admission office and asked about the additional sample of writing. They told me to scan out any sample of writing and send through email. I did that and has not heard anything since then.

btw, their EA really takes a lot of time.
decision will be out on 15Feb…

Thanks for the information! One of the admissions counselors called my house today but we weren’t home so I’m trying to catch them again.

^^ hbrad, I agree that the decision process seems a lot longer here than any of the schools we looked at. ED takes 60 days and EA takes about 75 days for a decision, which is longer than some publics. I wonder why

The web site says that EA decisions will be made on February 15th but that is not actually correct according to Admissions. They have until that date to make the decision but they will come out on more of a rolling basis as they are reviewed and approved.

Thanks for the update BobbyCT. I have twins and one has gotten an answer (from another college) so Feb. seemed a long time for the other to have to wait!

@BobbyCT: how did you know that the release of decisions is on rolling basis? I’m really dying of waiting…
My ED is coming on tues… but in case I cannot get in, i will have to wait until feb for this DePauw EA… arghhh

There was an EA Acceptance thread from early 2007 (granted that was 3 years ago) that indicated that people were getting EA acceptances on a rolling basis in January. Hope that helps.

hbrad, I was told by someone in Admissions last week and a few current students confirmed it. It is unlikely that you will have to wait until February for a decision.

depauw isn’t that hard to get into, probably no need to worry especially if you are a full paying or close to full paying customer
