Any advice on dropping classes?

Hey guys,
Currently I'm in a situation where I will most likely fail the course or get a C in two out of my four classes this semester. These classes are not difficult and I'm positive I can get an A but I have fallen behind. I have not received my financial aid thus I have not been able to buy the books for these two classes. I'm thinking of dropping these two classes and getting two W's for this semester then retaking them to get a better grade. If I do drop the classes, this would put my total of W's to 3. I am going to talk the professors and see if there is still a chance of getting at least a B but I want to hear the opinions of forum members.

What advice can you guys give? Keep going and trying? How will this affect my transfer chances to UCLA or UCB if I have 3 W's?

Just a little more information in case it's needed: This is my third semester at a CC and I currently have a 3.6 GPA. I am also enrolled in the Honor's program. My major as of now is Cognitive Science.

Edit: The two classes are not major prerequisites and are not for IGETC but they are UC Transferable.

If you are applying this semester, then it’s possible that your chance may be limited… Fall grades are super important TBH. If not, you should go ahead and drop it to preserve your GPA. 3W’s is absolutely acceptable, just be careful that if you want to go to grad school, it may count a W as an F :)

If I were you, I would talk to the prof first and see if anything I can do to bring up my grades to at least a B like you said. It has been just 8 weeks so far, so there’s still time to save your butt, especially if you are applying this semester.

That’s another problem I face. If I drop the two classes then I will be behind in units thus I won’t be able to transfer this year unless I manage to take 21 units during Spring. However, I was already planning to stay an extra year since I will not have all my major prerequisites complete by the end of Spring 2012.

Thanks for the response sparkyboy(:

I have another question if someone could answer. Does dropping these two classes affect my financial aid for future semesters? I know if I drop them, this semester I will receive less money than a full time student but what about in future semesters?

Take less units, of course would have a negative affect on you at the moment, but long run will benefit you. (financial aid related). W’s umm not that much of an impact unless u apply for grad school.

A-B-W-D-F-C. Grades in order. ( just in my opinion.) If you want to get in UCB or UCLA, you would have to get more As than Bs.

W,D,F over C any day for me XD. C is the worse grade ever. You cant retake, and it hurts ur GPA so badly.

lol, so realistic. It’s true, but for undergrad only.

Then I’d advise you to drop the classes, but not now. Stick with it for another month and drop it a week or so before the “last day to drop with a W.” You paid the money, make it worth it lol. Plus, maybe after another month, the material becomes easier and you can bring your grades up. Who knows? ;)

Do talk to your prof though. He/she may help you bring up your grade and save you from retaking those courses.

I don’t think so, but you should double check with your admission&records office  It depends on the school, I guess.

Haha I feel the same way about C’s. I rather have a second chance with a W but the Grad School thing does worry me a little. Hopefully, retaking the classes and getting A’s will allow grad schools to overlook the W’s.

I was thinking the same thing sparkyboy. I’m going to stay until the week before the drop class deadline if I do decide to drop.

Yes, I will be talking to my professors and counselor to see what they say. Hopefully they can help me out. Thanks for everything so far guys(:

No prob. You should google, or go to the grad school subforum and search for info abt your grad school’s W-policy. Some may overlook it, some count it as a 0.0, so better be careful :D

They don’t care about W’s as long as you don’t have a ton. I transferred to UCSD with 4 W’s and 1 F

^ He was worried abt grad school…
For undergrad, it’s true that it has almost no bad effect, just don’t have like 20 W’s and it’s OK
