Like many of you, I was waitlisted yesterday to McCormick for MechE. The admission decision said that the submission of extra materials was not recommended, but that they would like to see any academic information not previously reported. Is there anything I can do within the bounds of this statement to express my continued interest in Northwestern? It is my first choice but I did not apply ED for financial reasons. The Northwestern waitlist isn’t as dire as some other schools (such as Stanford’s 7 waitlist enrolls last year), but the odds are still incredibly tough. I was one of two students from my school to be waitlisted, and the only one to accept the waitlist placement. There were not any acceptances out of the 20 or so applies; I go to an average public high school about 20 miles from NU, and a few students usually attend Northwestern every year. All of the advice circulating around the internet seems to involve sending notes, additional letters of rec., etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and congratulations to all those accepted!! Northwestern seems like an absolutely amazing place.
I should also add that no, I am not counting on Northwestern in any way, shape, or form. I will be sending in an enrollment deposit to UIUC in the near future.
Try to demonstrate interest. Speak to a counselor. Update them on your grades and achievements. Explain why you didn’t apply ED. Perhaps even expand your horizons and do something a little different than you’ve ever done before. Good luck
