I’m desperate for a good, solid internship in high school, something I believe can strengthen my application in the journalism field. In your experience, has there been anything that helped you a lot in getting one? I’m looking for something that I can use to perhaps demonstrate my skills as a journalist or data scientist. Any help would be appreciated!
How about getting a “job”.
I recommend writing: for a school newspaper, town or city paper, yearbook, blog (your own or someone else’s), a nonprofit.
I would imagine that internships for high school kids are probably very few and far between. So here’s what I suggest:
- Get that job that @thumper1 mentioned. I'm a huge advocate of kids having jobs. I think it teaches them responsibility in a way that no class or EC can.
- Be a big part of your school's newspaper and yearbook. Be willing to do both the big jobs and the small, dirtier job. Build your reputation as being someone the newspaper/yearbook can count on.
- Look into freelance writing. Google is your friend here. There are so many opportunities -- many of them paid. Get published for quality work, and start a portfolio.
