Any advice...Pratt or SVA

My daughter was accepted to Pratt, SVA, MassArt, AI Boston, AI Chicago and Ringling for photography, but feels she wants to be in NY. Does anyone have any insights into Pratt or SVA for photography/ditigal arts? Any would be appreciated.
Thanks

First choice for photography is RIT. I also recommend SCAD, the photo faculty are outstanding, and the facilities are very very good. RIT is probably best known for commercial and photojournalism for photo. SCAD has really good faculty. That's all I can tell ya!

Yes, RIT is very well known in Photography as is SAIC and RISD. I can't tell you about SVA's or SCAD's photography program.

You really need to visit the schools, check out the facilites and visit the sourounding areas of the schools.

My daughter is a fine arts major at SVA. I started a thread with my impressions.

I can't give you too much of a direct answer on the quality of the photo or digital media programs. If you go to livejournal, you will find that the students say that the equipment is excellent. Photo majors have recently begun complaining about the sheer number of photo majors. If you go to the SVA website and select the different majors, you can find your way to the computer art departments website. They post the students' project. They are very strong.

By reputation, in photography, SAIC is the strongest of the schools your daughter has been admitted to. That reputation is based on the MFA program, so you have to do some research to find out more. I do hope your daughter visits the places she is now considering. If you're from the east, don't too readily discount Chicago as a center of the arts. It is quite fabulous and becoming more so.

My daughter was also accepted @ Pratt for the fall along with a merit award (enough to have a major influence on her decision ) . We just came back from NYC and I have to say the Pratt and SVA are very different. Pratt truly has a campus. The surrounding area in Brooklyn is quiet and gracious (ironically many manhattan students live in nearby Williamsburg, because the rents are much cheaper). Art is everywhere in NYC. There were more exhibits than we could possibly fit in - The emerging artists show @ the Amory, Pulse, Rauchenburg @ the Met, Munch @ MOMA, The Whitney Biennial, Goya @ The Frick. I know art students spent alot of time in the studio, but my daughter was so excited and inspired by all we saw and I just don't think you can beat NYC for that inspiration .

Thank you everyone for the great information. I really appreciate it. Artschoolmom, did your daughter decide to choose Pratt? We are going to visit at the end of the month.

She still has some liberal arts schools and RISD to hear from, so will not make a decision as yet. She had an incredible time in NYC though, and I'd say Pratt is her favorite today. She really wants a strong liberal arts component which Pratt seems to have. Be forewarned, I found the admissions building at Pratt the worst of any school I've seen in all my years of college visiting !

We are still waiting to hear from RISD too. Did she visit SVA?

She looked @SVA last fall. I did not. She felt it was not a good fit for her - too specialized and lacking in community. She did apply to the 5 year BFA/BA program @ Eugene Lang/ Parson's, but eliminated that during our recent NYC trip. You really do get a feel for a school when you visit them.
