Any Africans here?

I'm from Ghana and it looks as though I'm the only African here. I just wanted to know whether there are any other africans on CC.

south africa

I’m not international (first generation American), but I’m Nigerian.

nice. I was beginning to think I was the only African on CC. Where are you guys applying to

I learned it is much easier for us, Africans, to get into the top colleges because they want diversity. How true is it

I’m applying to Yale EA, Harvard, WashU, Emory, Duke, Columbia, Amherst (maybe), and GA Tech for a safety. If I get into Yale EA, I’ll probably only also apply to Harvard and WashU.

I’ve read that Africans are overrepresented at top colleges, which is absolutely ridiculous. So much wrong with that statement.

Yeah. Is the source reliable.

I am applying to Cornell, Amherst, UPenn, Williams, Reed, Lafayette, Occidental, Brown, Bates, Wesleyan, Oberlin and maybe Yale

What did you score on the SAT. I scored 2030 and I will take Math II and Chem in December

I’m Nigerian, but grew up in Botswana!

cool Femiluv. Where are you applying to

I’m originally from Morocco. =) It is not really considered ‘Africa’ but it still is…
I am applying REA to Stanford =D

yeah im from zimbabwe.also applyng to oberlin, stanford…

Cool. So do you guys think an African can get into an Ivy League school with a SAT score of 2000. Do you know any African who has entered an Ivy league school and his stats.

South African in the building! :-)

Trying to go ivy. I think being African’s a plus in general for admission prospects. I know one guy from here in South Africa who got into Yale - it was definitely a bonus for him.

His stats: Valedictorian, impoverished background, black african, really likeable guy, SAT in the 1700s. His excellent high school academics and background, I think, were the dealbreakers.

Cool. I guess I stand a chance then. I have a similar background and high school academics. My SAT is also better,2030 and I will be taking the Math I and Chemistry in December.

hie guys.its totally possible 2 get into an ivyleague school.my harvard bound friend(Ill include his stats at the end) i think got in because of his essay, awesome character and impoverished background. here are his stats: SAT1:1980,SAT2:1750,academics:good,but nt great,essay:BRILLIANT-sad but inspiring.

I guess that means one’s background really helps. Right now I have two essays and do not know which one to submit for the commonapp personal statement. One is about the challenges I have faced because of my impoverished background and the other is about my passion for learning. Will it be better to use the one about my passion for the learning as the personal statement and then use some information from the challenges one for the additional information?

I think you should focus on your passion for learning. Focusing on your impoverished background might seem like you’re fishing for sympathy a little too much - I’m trying to avoid that angle in my application, only mentioning my meagre resources in terms of how that background influenced me. But by all means, make it clear that your background has affected you in some way - that is integral to your background ‘hook’ for admission.

A large majority of Africans get into Ivies with low scores yes usually by spinning the impoverished background story. I have seen a large number myself . . . not that I agree with it. Also, most times they were stellar in school- just didnt do well in the SAT. It would be impossible though if you were average in both areas- SAT and previous academic records.

I have to agree with you there - my academic record is really good, but not incredibly marvellous; so, my SAT score is kind of my ‘hook’ as an African applicant because, as mentioned, not many of us have scores in the 2100 - 2400 range for the SAT reasoning.

Also, I’m curious about my fellow Africans’ view on the subject SAT - is it extremely pivotal? I have a 750 for Math level 1 and 780 math level 2 - I’m doing physics in december. Is that enough?

TPrestige-its very typical for africans to score very highly on SAT2 but only modestly on SAT1.My advice to you is to not concern yourself with test scores.Your hook as an african is nothing else but your african identity.I have read essays by zimbabwean students now at harvard, yale, stanford MIT etc and they were all about their regular life as an african. They were not about poverty or trxing to gain sympathy, but about perservering in spite of everything.just make sure your essay reflects your uniquenesr AS AN AFRICAN.
