Any alternatives for a business degree for a career in the business field?

I want to become a marketing manager but if I hypothetically go to a school without business administration, are any other majors even worth considering?

I was thinking int’l studies, comms, econ, maybe even pol. sci. with a certificate in management or marketing?

Another option is one of the 1 year master programs that are getting popular. UT has a masters of marketing for people without an undergraduate business background for example.

@Ivyt I’m sorry, do you mind explaining how that works?

Econ, many LACs do not have business majors and that is what most students take to replce bus/finance

A communications major would be good for marketing, especially if combined with economics.

psychology degree applicable to marketing

I was actually checking out @Ivyt suggestion and it looks likes (just to keep my options open) a lot of MBA programs that don’t require the GMAT require a quantitative degree.

What exactly does that entail? Because in my view, some degrees like psych or sociology are on the fence.

@TomSrOfBoston Thanks for bringing that up. I thought I was too off the path to get an econ degree, but I just need a one class to complete that major prep. I may be able to double major econ/comms

For psych major, you would still need to take a stats course. Psych in the upper level courses rely heavily on quant skills. As long as you take Math and Stats, you can still major in Psych, I would imagine.

@preppedparent Awesome. I’m a scientist at heart, it would be cool to be able to get a degree in a scientific field.

I would think sociology would be better for marketing because it examines cultural trends more than psychology does. Does your school offer a BS or BA in economics?

Both Social Psychology and Cognitive Psych reveal how the brain responds to its environment, aka marketing.

@philbegas The school I’m looking at offers a BA in Econ or Econ/Acct

Can you name the school? I’m curious if the econ/accounting problem is AACSB accredited (although I doubt it)

@philbegas UC Santa Barbara

@philbegas Turns out it is not. But how serious is that since this is for marketing?

@AverageAchiever What do you mean? They do require GMAT, at least the good ones. Virginia has one as well. Basically they take someone without a business background and train you / teach you all the marketing or business stuff.

Statistics might be a good option, perhaps combined with some economics and communications courses.

@happy1 I think Stats is too far gone for me. As of now, as an almost finished sophomore, I have only gotten up to Elementary Stats (never thought I would need to to take maths so early).

Maybe I might be able to complete a stats minor?
