I get lonely being the only anthropology major :p

I've seen one or two of you out there but we never get a chance to chat.

What schools did you guys apply to?
Where are you hoping to go?
What sub-field are you going to focus on?
What aspect of anthropology drew you in?

What do you tell people when they ask you what anthropology is?
I have had a lot of people ask me thinking that it has something to do with animals, or some people who have never even heard of the discipline before.

I applied to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD and UCD! LA is definitely my top choice. As for a sub-field, I’m leaning towards Biological Anthro because it more closely relates to what I want to do in the future, which is to attend medical school.

A lot of people ask me why I’m an Anthro major shooting for major school: it’s simply because I find it interesting and I want to avoid competing against the many exceptional life science majors there are, native and foreign, in the U.S.

When people ask me what Anthropology is, I just say it’s the study of human culture to keep it simple. :)

Lol I think the same thing seeing only engineering majors etc.

I applied to UCLA, UCSB, UCSC, UCSD, Chico State, Sonoma State, CSU East Bay, and SDSU. SB is my top choice but I have to decide on a 2nd choice since I’m appealing to SB and might not get lucky.

I’m not entirely sure which field I’d want to focus on because I love each one for different reasons. For now, it’s cultural. I just love everything about anthro. I was so confused what to major in for many years and discovering anthro was like the best thing to ever happen. I didn’t know there was such a field that fit me and the things I like learning about. I didn’t want to be forced to major in anything, I wanted something that really sparked my interest.

Hmm I always tell others that it’s the study of humans in a wide range of areas that all interrelate in some way etc. lol it’s kind of complicated to explain everything that anthro is!

I applied to Cal, UCLA, UCSD, Davis, and SDSU. Got rejected from SDSU, but that wasn’t where I really wanted to go anyways. Currently I’m thinking about seriously attending UCSD because I think it would suit me overall. I’m sure if I get accepted into Cal or UCLA that I would put more thought into all the pros and cons each university has, but right now my gut is pulling me towards UCSD. As for the specific subfield I’m interested that is archaeology. Trying to find answers about the past sounds pretty intriguing. I like thinking about how people before me lived and what their lives were like. I want a connection to the past. As for explaining what anthro, typically I just don’t even bother. I won’t do it justice anyways.

I seriously though I wasn’t going to get any responses to this. It is such a pleasure to meet you all!
Do you guys have specific career plans within anthropology?

@ale2194
UCLA is my first choice as well! Maybe we will run into each other and not even know it
I’m guessing you applied for their B.S. program as opposed to their B.A. program?

@lenorexo
Good luck with your UCSB appeal.
My story with discovering the feild of anthropology is somewhat similar. I liked so many different disaplines but nothing felt “right.” Then along came anthropology and, as corny as it sounds, I just knew. I agree! All the subfields are amazing! I’m sticking to cultural anthropology myself, and might focus on environmental anthropology?

Nice (: I don’t meet very many archeology students! It seems that most who study anthropology go for cultural and biological, archeology and linguistics seem to be a bit underrepresented. Is there any particular region you want to study?

@AnthroFlo
Yeah it’s possible, hahaha! It would actually be very interesting for all the College Confidential forum users to have a meetup at each UC and meet with everyone else! I feel like that’d be a great start to finding some friends, though I’m sure most of us won’t have a problem with that once we’re at one of the UC’s. It might personally be a little weird for me to be dorming with other transfer students because I’m pretty young to be transferring :P. And yeah, I applied to their B.S. program! (More closer to Med-School related subjects than the B.A. is)

@Zalrons
I have actually had people ask me if studying anthropology is like Indiana Jones, but I have actually never seen the movies so I have no clue.

One woman in particular did get really excited when I told her I studied anthropology and she asked if I was going to be like Bones (t.v. show which includes a forensic anthropologist)…

Hey AnthroFlo! Thanks for starting the threat, it does seem like no one is studying anthro but I hope that changes
Im a cultural anthro major studying at CCSF and transferring this year
What schools did you guys apply to? I applied to Berkeley, UCLA and Stanford
Where are you hoping to go? Berkeley but will only be able to attend if I get the regents so really hoping that works out
What sub-field are you going to focus on? strictly cultural, however it has been fun studying the biological and archaeological branches of anthro
What aspect of anthropology drew you in? I think what draws me to anthro is the methodology of field work and the participant observation aspect of it. without field work there is only statistics and data , essentially knowledge about a subject but the only way you’ll understand the knowledge is if you make the decision to get out there and meet the subject and live along side the subject/culture. also the whole thing about getting informants sounds super cool

What do you tell people when they ask you what anthropology is? good question, I try to just give them a superficial answer, like studying people by getting to know them personally. I think most people that dont know what anthro is dont really care to know. its not like its a hidden secret what we do , plus theres always google

Only applied to UCSD and UCLA, non trad student.
I got my acceptance from UCSD for Anthropology (biological concentration) BA, but am really hoping for UCLA. Pretty cool to see all the anthro majors here, I didn’t expect that.

@lamelcriada
Good luck with your admissions, all the schools you applied to seem pretty intense and selective. Good luck!!

@RCLA325
I didn’t really expect too many people to answer the post!
Nice to hear from everyone, good luck with UCLA (fingers crossed that notifications will come out soon)! :D

I wonder if admissions at CAL for L&S is by major or social science category. It is scary to think that since anthro is in social sciences it only has a 20% acceptance rate roughly. Hopefully they just admit by major- Cal is my #1 pick! Do you guys think a 3.75-3.8 is good enough to get into Berkeley for anthro, is it “competitive”?

Here, Ms. Sun(A very reliable authority on all things that are related to the UCs) states the following:

“Approximate “competitive” GPA by admit rate (see page 5 of the Transfer Admission Brochure):
Aim for 3.8+ GPA if the admit rate for your major is less than 20%
Aim for around 3.7 if the admit rate is around 20%
Aim for 3.7-3.8 for Biological Sciences
Aim for 3.5+ for 30%-40% admit rate”

Since your major, anthropology, is in the social sciences division, which had a 26% admission rate last year, It appears that you’ll need about a 3.7 to be competitive. Your GPA exceeds this, so I’m more confident in saying that you’re competitive for Berkeley. Good luck!

Nice find @Cayton! I have been looking for something like that for a while. I wish Berkeley would post the same type of major stats sheet that UCLA has.

I have seen the one for Cal but can’t locate it at the moment…
