After getting rejected in the face yesterday, I've decided to appeal (hey, Cal's my 1st choice). However, does anyone have any advice for appealing?

I am planning to talk about my family situation, how my mom had to work through minimum wage jobs and the such just because she didn't really care about her education back in Taiwan (well she did go to college, but she majored in something she had no interest in, and didn't try hard enough and such) and how she still works to provide me and my sister a college education (something like that), because I didn't elaborate on that at all on my essays (no space). Would that work?

Also, if anyone here successfully appealed, could you give me some pointers? Thanks, and GO BEARS! :D (or GO TRITONS!, if my appeal fails... lol)

Honestly, I would say just go with UCSD only because the appeal process is way too stressful, and at the end you might be disappointed again. Why go through the pain twice??

Yeah, I don't planning on repeating information and stuff I've said though.

I've heard of like recruiting groups that will do stuff to help you appeal, but they're mostly for URMs and stuff, so would one of those groups be willing to help me (I'm Chinese, Taiwanese to be exact)? :D

I think UCSD is nice and all, but it's a 7 hour drive... and I prefer to be close to home (Cal is like an hour away). ;)

make sure you put how that experience has affected your life and its not solely focused on your mom. The appeals committee might look at it and say "so what?" otherwise.

shortduderay - I am in the same situation as you are! I'm appealing to Berkeley as well and I have the same reasons why I'm hesitant about going to UCSD (I'm from San Jose! =D).

Haha, yeah, I'm appealing UCLA (my #1) and since I have something written, I'm also going to appeal Berkeley (also very close, I live in the Bay, haha)

What's awesome is that my friend successfully appealed Berkeley last year and she sent me her appeal so I'm reviewing that & hopefully being inspired by it.

Uh... just asking... they look at your original application... right? I thought I had decent stats except for my GPA (4.0 UC W, 33 ACT, 800 Chinese, 780 Math II, 740 Chem SAT IIs), so do I have a decent shot? Also, they DO consider your senior year grades too (4.0 UW, 4.6W)?

You have nothing NEW but perhaps something COMPELLING in that you can plead a FINANCIAL HARDSHIP CASE. Any documented medical and caring problems would ace it.
